🎉We're celebrating the 96th Anniversary of the Incident Meteorologist (IMET) Program today, July 29th! 🎉
The IMET program is one of the longest continually running programs in the U.S. National Weather Service (NWS) - which was called the U.S. Weather Bureau at the time. In the 1920s, Leslie Gray, a fire weather forecaster out of the San Francisco office and our first IMET, installed a two-way radio on his truck and traveled to the fires, preparing forecasts and briefing fire bosses on the spot. His first mission was on July 29, 1928, to the Miller Canyon Fire on what was the Santa Barbara National Forest in California. Over the first 5 years, the mobile weather unit served at about 245 fires.
Support at wildland fires and prescribed burns remains the backbone of the IMET program, with hundreds of additional NWS meteorologists supporting other incidents and events across the county as part of our Impact-Based Decision Support Services. Outdoor workers can be at a higher risk from the effects of excessive heat. When working under hot conditions, OSHA recommends as well as allowing more frequent breaks for new workers or workers who have been away from the job for a week or more (acclimatization). Knowing symptoms, prevention, and emergency response methods can help prevent heat-related illnesses and death. Check weather forecasts ahead of time to be better prepared ecs.page.link/pnR6W
