It’s not too early to teach children how to meditate. Mindfulness strengthens kids’ pre-frontal cortex in the brain. It’s with the pre-frontal cortex how we can learn, plan and make decisions (among other things). As a result, mindful meditation can develop cognitive control and most importantly, emotional intelligence in the growing brain of a child. This is part of the reason why we end many of our “social skills circle time” sessions with a meditation.

The impact of pretend play on a child's development cannot be underestimated. Every childcare setting should have a dramatic play option because it is a significant contributor to documented cognitive, social and emotional benefits. Cognitively, children remember real life experiences and use their imagination to enhance those experiences during dress up. Emotionally, they develop empathy by placing themselves in someone else's shoes (literally and figuratively). They develop fine motor skills (buttoning a baby's shirt) needed for writing and gross motor skills (pushing a shopping cart). When kids pretend play they practice social skills such as cooperation, taking turns, problem-solving and sharing. Overall, their imagination is at work and they are reminded that they can do and be anything.
