📚 Reading and one-on-one instruction 📖

Learning to read is one of the most important things your child will ever do. How well they can read will determine their educational acheivements later in life and contribute to confidence in the adult world.

Here at Laurel Academy we use resources from several phonics curricula, along with one-on-one instruction to get the best results with our early readers. We concentrate first on the pre-reading skills and being able to hear and differentiate between letter sounds. Our students then learn the proper way to sound out words (called decoding). Additionally, they are taught and practice the spelling rules that will result in a child who can accurately spell out words from their sounds (called encoding). This early instruction is guaranteed to bridge your child into excellent fluency and comprehension.

Enrollment Now Open for Elementary Students for Fall 2024

Literacy is the key to future success.

- According to the Nation's Report Card, only 32% of Washington state 4th grade students are proficient in reading. The lack of proficiency has lifelong implications.
- Fluency develops as a result of many opportunities to practice reading with a high degree of success.
- Regular read-a-loud opportunities allow the teachers to assess and correct as the children are doing their daily reading.
- At Laurel Academy, because of our 10:1 student-teacher ratio, your student will receive one-on-one literacy instruction weekly (and sometimes daily) in order to help them gain full comprehension and confidence in their reading skills.
- Based on the results of our mid-year evaluations, all of our students are at or above grade level, with many of our students testing one and two grade levels above their age cohort.

Our Math Program and Results

- Our math program requires 100% proficiency at each skill before moving on to the next lesson.
- 57% of Laurel students are one year or more above grade level in math
