Empowering all Washingtonians to engage in a more responsible and responsive democracy
LWVUS adopts a position in support of local news 📢📢📢
At its National Convention on Saturday, June 29, in Washington, D.C. the League of Women Voters of the United States adopted a position in support of local news. The new national position was developed from a study by Washington State League members.
The LWVWA study showed that a third of the nation’s newspapers are expected to close by the end of this year. More than 200 counties are now considered “news deserts,” with no source of reliable local news.
"The study also found that democracy suffers in communities with no credible source of local news: fewer people vote or run for office, and political polarization and government corruption grow. These are outcomes democracy cannot withstand," said LWVWA President Mary Coltrane.

LWV responds to the US Supreme Court's 6 – 3 decision in Trump v. United States.
This erosion of democracy expands executive authority to give sitting US presidents the powers of a king — which is exactly what our republic was established to avoid.

Image text is white and yellow, and reads: "LWV Statement in Response to SCOTUS Decision on Presidential Immunity. The Supreme Court's ruling to grant extraordinary immunity for sitting presidents is the most dangerous decision for democracy of our time. This erosion of democracy expands executive authority to give sitting US presidents the powers of a king, which is exactly what our republic was established to avoid. According to the Court's own words, the US Supreme Court is 'charged with ensuring the American people the promise of equal justice under law.' With this decision, the court has taken yet another step to dissolve democracy and abandon the American people, elevating the seat of president above the law. Our country is at an existential crossroads, and voters must make a critical decision about the direction of our nation. The League will continue to do our part by providing nonpartisan election information for voters at VOTE411.org, empowering voters to send a clear message about the future we want. We urge American voters to turn up and turn out in November to ensure our democracy reflects the will of the people."

Yesterday marked 11 years since the Shelby County v. Holder decision—and voters of color across the country continue to face intense efforts to stifle their voices and exclude them from participating in our democracy.
This is the devastating legacy of Shelby County v. Holder a decade years later.
Congress must act to protect the freedom to vote.

an intentional act to target and exclude some voters from the electoral process. Voting rights impact everyone. Urge Congress to protect the right to vote."

Did you know that the LWVWA not only has its civics education textbook, we've also produced (and translated) a history booklet on Latino history in Washington.
📘📘📘📘📘
About two years ago, the LWVWA learned that the largest and fastest growing population in Washington are Latino. Thus begun our project to translate our civics ed materials into Spanish—starting with our "What Does it Take to be a Good Citizen?" poster.
We also began to research and produce a booklet about Latino History in Washington, which is available in both English and Spanish.
Check out the history booklet and all our books ➡️ https://lwvwaef.myshopify.com/collections/shop-books

We are SO excited about the fact that many of our civics education materials are now available in Spanish as well as English! 🎉🎉🎉
After consultation with the Directors of the multi-Language Learning Department at the Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, we learned that more than 40,000 students in Washington are in dual language (English/Spanish) classes. To accommodate these students, we've translated the elementary issue of The State We're In, our Latino History in Washington booklet, AND our "What Does it Take to be a Good Citizen?" poster into Spanish!
You can find all of our translated materials ➡️ https://lwvwaef.myshopify.com/collections/non-english-language-resources

Have you heard about our civics education textbook, the State We're In: Washington?
📘📘📘📘
Our books are available in two editions. One is designed for grades 6 and up and the other for use in elementary schools. They include information about Native tribes in Washington—how tribes governed themselves pre-contact, how they are governed today, and how they interact with WA and local governments. These colorful books include the ethnic and geographic diversity of our state and are designed to inspire students to become active citizens in their community.
The Washington State Council for the Social Studies and the Washington State Indian Education Association have both endorsed these materials.
