Forterra NW
Forterra drives land-based solutions in Washington to support a healthy environment and resilient communities for all. We love this place.
We want to keep it special. To do this, we conserve land, develop innovative policies, and support sustainable rural and urban development. In our 30-year history, we have helped conserve more than 223,000 acres. Our work reaches from the farmlands and river canyons of Yakima to the estuaries and forests of Washington’s coastline.
Join us for our 2024 Fall Fundraiser at the stunning Intellectual House on the University of Washington campus, featuring special guest Swil Kanim.
The fundraising event is Friday, Sept. 27, from 5:30 pm to 7 p.m. Tickets are $100.
Come support Forterra in our drive to connect people and place as we steward our landscapes into 2025. Swil Kanim of the Lummi Nation, classical violinist, poet, and veteran, will inspire us all through music and the tradition of storytelling.
Like the Forterra Nature Discovery™ events, where we invite everyone to experience nature in a variety of ways (interpretation, meditation and wildlife photography), Swil Kanim bridges nature and our lives through music, conversation and poems. It is a reverent journey, a gift, that holds us to this beautiful ground that we call home and inspires us all to be good stewards.

Our Summer Saturdays walk at Hazel Wolf Wetlands Preserve was a perfect, hot day to be underneath the shady canopy of giant maples and 100-year-old fir trees.
Naturalist and professional interpreter Gary Mozel (above, in the green vest) unveiled so many fascinating facts.
Did you know?
- Snags of old red alder trees provide habitat for migratory bats that can eat up to 500 mosquitos a night. Thank you, bats (you’re not so scary)!
- Second growth forests are the most carbon sequestering because of their fast growth.
- Western tanagers, intensely yellow with a bright orange head, make their yearly visit from Central America to feast on insects. We were fortunate enough to spot one.
- We also learned that beavers, while creating dams and large pools of deeper wetlands, encourage growth of native species of plants (Douglas spirea and cattails) and push out the invasive canary grass.
Two very special guests attended our morning walk: Ann and Fred Weinmann. They launched the preservation of Hazel Wolf Wetlands Preserve by recognizing and advocating for its special contribution to the Sammamish watershed. This led to Forterra and partners protecting this marshy gem.
Thank you to all who attended our Hazel Wolf Wetlands Preserve walks. We have more great events coming soon! See Link in Bio for more events.
While we enjoy getting outside for Forterra Nature Discovery Program™ Summer Saturdays, here’s our first Fall Forays event to add to your calendar.
Join us on September 21 at Hazel Wolf Wetland Preserve for an afternoon of forest meditation and teachings with Ajahn Kovilo and Ajahn Nisabho of Clear Mountain Monastery.
The event is free. Register via Link in Bio.
Designed for everyone to experience, the 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm event will start with a brief introduction to the property followed by a sitting meditation, a talk and ending with a walking meditation.
The Buddha was born under a tree, attained Enlightenment under a tree, lived and practiced under trees, and passed away under a tree. From those earliest days through the entire course of Buddhist history native forests and wilderness preserves played a vital part in nurturing the spiritual lives of sincere and ardent practitioners intent on understanding the truth of “the way things are.”
One of the highest-quality wetlands in the Greater Seattle Area, Hazel Wolf Wetlands Preserve is a wonderland of ponds, marshes and forests stewarded and protected by Forterra.
Let’s see what we can learn from sitting together there!
Forterra’s Board of Directors has unanimously endorsed joining an unprecedented statewide coalition of more than 200 organizations to defeat Initiative 2117 – the November election ballot measure that would repeal Washington’s Climate Commitment Act.
Opposing the repeal of this landmark law aligns with Forterra’s mission to innovate and scale land-based solutions to address the climate crisis and support equitable, green and prosperous communities for all. Critical funding for conservation is at risk.
If the repeal passes, Initiative 2117 would slash billions of dollars from vital community investments, shifting the costs of carbon pollution onto families and communities.
We can’t afford it.
Join us on Forterra Friday, July 19 from 10 AM to 1 PM for a rewarding day of removing invasive species like Himalayan blackberry and English ivy.
Enjoy time outside and clear the way for native plants to thrive!

What a beautiful day in nature we had!
Saturday launched Forterra’s Nature Discovery Program where more than 25 of us strolled quietly through the 90-acre Morse Wildlife Preserve.
We searched for and spotted goldfinches, bluebirds, violet-green & tree swallows, western tanagers and swainson’s thrush and so many more. We learned that many of these birds arrived recently from central Mexico to spend the summer here before heading back again.
Naturalist Gary Mozel fascinated us with so many other insightful details here are just a few:
- The leaves of the tiny, white flowering miner’s lettuce (winter purslane) were tasted by some and described as similar to cilantro.
- Thatcher ants, whose nests measure about a foot high and two feet wide, distribute flower seeds all over the prairie.
- We measured a Garry oak and calculated its age to be around 250 years.
We saw blooming violet lupin and camas that had gone to seed and evidence of the black tailed deer and elk that snack on them.
Thank you, Gary, for engaging us with the interconnectedness of nature’s community and our community.
Everyone seemed so energized and delighted from engaging with nature for a couple of hours.
Forterra recognizes how getting outside to enjoy these thriving landscapes benefits our sense of wellbeing. It’s why we plan to offer similar outings year-round.
We’d love your help – to support Forterra’s Nature Discovery Program and other projects. From improving climate resiliency to taking care of our personal wellness, Forterra embraces Land for Good where people and nature thrive together.

Join us for a free interpretive walk on June 1 at Morse Wildlife Preserve, as we take in the lush prairie landscape and watch for the beautiful and rare Western Bluebird.
Morse Wildlife Preserve is the first of Forterra properties to offer free walking tours through Summer Saturdays, a Forterra Nature Program. These tours will be led by Gary Mozel, an experienced interpretive planner and naturalist.
Tours will also be July 20 at Hazel Wolf Wetlands Preserve, and August 24 at Arrowhead Point.
At Morse, birders will get to search among all varieties of swallows, warblers and sparrows to catch a glimpse of the Western Bluebird, (warmly referred to by some as “the sweetheart of the Morse”). This rare thrush is marked by its deep, shiny blue and orange-rust vest.
The prairie and Garry oak savanna found at Morse provide the right conditions for the bird’s feeding habits. Mostly, they like to forage for insects among the grass and camas and take in fruit and berries later in the year.
Come learn what is special about each of the landscapes that are under Forterra’s care and the story of how they became protected for everyone to enjoy. Bring your camera, binoculars, friends and family!

Forterra mourns the recent death of Jeffrey Veregge, 50, a Washington State artist and writer whose creations represented the traditions of his Suquamish and Duwamish Tribal ancestry. Jeffrey passed April 12 of a heart attack.
A few years ago, Forterra commissioned artwork by Jeffrey to represent our Port Gamble Forest Project. Jeffrey created the image in our post - a beautiful portrayal of past, present, human, and extractive relationships with the world.
Born into the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe near Kingston, Kitsap County, Veregge was perhaps best known for his use of form-line design with pop culture inspiration that his fans dub “Salish Geek”.
You can see more of Jeffrey’s work at jeffreyveregge.com

🌱 :
🌳 At Forterra, we are all about empowering communities and promoting local sustainability through programs like the Evergreen Restoration Program and Community Restoration Grants. Support local efforts to stimulate the economy and preserve farmland for future generations! 💪
Our work on this Earth Day wouldn’t be possible without the ongoing support from you. Support Forterra’s mission by making a gift. See link in bio.
Arbor Day is an opportunity to celebrate the importance of keeping Washington’s forests healthy and resilient.
In addition to sequestering carbon, healthy local forests provide many other environmental and health benefits as such as improving air quality, reducing soil erosion and water pollution, cooling cities and dampening noise pollution, recharging groundwater and sustaining stream flows, providing native wildlife habitat and outdoor recreation, and reducing stormwater impacts.
The Pacific Northwest has felt the acute effects of climate change for the last several years. We recognize now that even with urgent action, the impacts of climate change will continue to be felt.
We believe in direct, local action - and we invite you to join us.
Forterra’s Evergreen Restoration Program provides organizations and individuals with a local option to help address climate change through native tree planting. Forterra plants and maintains trees for carbon sequestration in cities and rural lands throughout Western Washington.
Since 2010, Forterra has partnered with other organizations to plant 63,371 trees in more than 162 locations. Based on the CUFR TREE Carbon Calculator, these trees will sequester more than 316,855 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) over their lifetimes.
In 2023 alone, our program supported local forest restoration by planting 2,278 native evergreen trees to offset carbon emissions.
See our link in bio for more information – and to see how you can help.
