On Monday, January 15th, Genesee Hill joined families from across Washington in Olympia for the WA PTA Focus on Advocacy Day. Our group of West Seattle families met with our three District 34 legislators in Olympia: Rep. Emily Alvarado, Senator Joe Nguyen, and Rep. Joe Fitzgibbon and spoke specifically to 1) Addressing critical gaps in education funding (counselors, nurses, reading and math intervention, etc.) and 2) Preventing and reducing gun violence.

Build connections in our school and our community.
The PTA works to strengthen connections between teachers, staff, families, and neighbors. We provide engaging events to help families connect with each other and to foster a strong sense of community. General membership meetings provide an opportunity to get more insight into what is happening in our school and to have a voice in where the PTA focuses our resources. While everyone is welcome, being a member is a great way to support this work, and as a member you get a vote.
Support your child. We use your ideas, feedback, and donations to improve the lives of our children by improving school grounds, hosting events, and working to promote an inclusive, welcoming learning environment. We work closely with teachers and school staff to find ways to support them in the important work that they do every day for our children.
Additionally, your membership will connect you to a nationwide network of PTA members who share resources, opportunities and tips to support your child and all children.
Amplify your voice. We believe our children benefit the most when all of our unique voices are heard. Use your vote as a member of the PTA to elect PTA leadership, approve the yearly PTA budget, and more.
The National PTA has a rich history of advocacy work, and is responsible for important programs and legislation such as child labor laws, hot and healthy school lunches, kindergarten classes, and special education, just to name a few. As a local PTA, the more members we have, the more influence we have when it comes to setting the advocacy agenda at the state and national levels, as well as influencing our elected officials when we lobby them on important issues that affect our children every day.
You don’t have to become a member to volunteer and you don’t have to volunteer if you become a member, but if you can, we’d love it if you did both!
