When iSchool Professor and UN consultant Karen E. Fisher was invited to Zaatari, the world’s largest Syrian refugee camp, she noticed that stories of the camp rarely included women’s voices. As she learned more about their lives, she had the idea to create a cookbook to counter the effects of domicide – the deliberate destruction of housing and basic infrastructure – and carve a space for the women to share their cultural knowledge with the world. Her new book, “Zaatari: Culinary Traditions of the World’s Largest Syrian Refugee Camp,” is a featured UW faculty book. Learn more at this link below!

Professor Emeritus David Levy has left a lasting impact on the iSchool community by introducing contemplative practices into the classroom. Over his 24-year teaching career, he remained dedicated to his vision of creating a contemplative university, one that prioritizes deep thinking and reflection. Levy's approach emphasizes the use of digital tools to support and enhance this mission, fostering an environment where technology serves the greater purpose of thoughtful, reflective education.
"There's a difference between thinking from the outside and from the inside, where you are being alive in the middle of thinking," Levy says. "When you're inside the work, you are intimately connected to it. You're not just investigating subject matter, you're investigating yourself in relation to that subject matter."
In retirement, David Levy keeps taking a mindful approach Fresh off a prestigious job with a Silicon Valley think tank, David Levy came to the UW iSchool in 2000 with a radical idea: What would it mean to look at ...
