"It was my duty to keep her alive and my whole life, I took that on."
In 1969, ten-year-old Charda Hasting began helping care for her mom, Charlene Hastings, one of Northwest Kidney Centers' first home hemodialysis patients.
After completing her junior year at Ballard High School, Charda attended community college classes, studied nursing, and worked briefly at Northwest Kidney Centers. She moved to Oregon after her mother passed in 1989. Not long after, Charda's own kidneys began to fail, and she found herself, like her mother before her, on dialysis.
"I've trusted Northwest Kidney Centers for over 40 years. My life has kind of come full circle, from caring for my mom to being on dialysis myself. And NKC has been a cherished part of my journey."
Sadly, Charda passed away on January 20th, 2024. Though her battle with kidney disease has ended, her legacy lives on. Hers is a story of resilience, determination, hope, and strength.
