🍩Lard Butt 1K welcomes all ages to join them and doesn't take itself too seriously. It features donut stations every 250 meters and hosts a well-stocked beer garden before and after the 1K. There's also a Free Kids Dash for those ages ten and younger.

Founder Mark Peterson wanted to create a race for any and all to get out and have fun with no pressure. They've kept the event affordable so all can attend among the growing costs of the city. He's also very aware of food insecurity in Seattle and wanted to give back to the community, so they began collecting non-perishable items from each race participant to donate to the University District Food Bank to help feed NE Seattle and beyond!

Meet our newest Board member, Matt P.

🍎Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Greensboro, North Carolina.

🍎What is your professional background?
I have an undergraduate in Electrical Engineering with a focus on communications from the University of Virginia. I have been with Verizon Wireless for over ten years now beginning as an intern while still in college. I have held several different roles in my time with Verizon, all focusing on the development and rollout of 5G technology.

🍎Coffee or tea?
I prefer coffee but peppermint tea is very refreshing.

🍎What is your favorite food?
My favorite meal is my mom's homemade lasagna, I ask her to make it everytime I travel home to North Carolina.

🍎What led you to join the board of the University District Food Bank?
I attended the 2023 food bank auction and was really inspired by the organization's great work and positive impact in the community. At that time I was looking for opportunities to volunteer in the community and was finishing up my MBA so when I heard the board's need for a treasurer it seemed like a great fit.

🍎Be like Matt and help us create a healthy, thriving community! We are recruiting for new board members for the University District Food Bank. Bring your energy and enthusiasm; prior board experience is not required. We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in human resources, finance, and fundraising. Lived experience and/or prior background in social services is a bonus.

‼️URGENT NEED‼

Due to technological issues with a non-profit partner, the University District Food Bank will NOT receive thousands of pounds of food this week.

As we struggle to keep our shelves stocked in this time of high demand, we need your help to keep nutritious food on the shelves this week (and every week).

Please consider donating any of the items listed here during the following times.
Monday 10am-3pm,
Tuesday 9am-7pm,
Wednesday 9am-1pm,
Thursday 9am-7pm,
Friday 10am-4pm,
Saturday 9am-1pm

Did you know that with the one head of lettuce you purchase, we could purchase 3 through our partnerships with local vendors. Please also consider a financial donation to fill the shelves!
www.udistrictfoodbank.org/donate

Thank you for your support at this time of high demand.

🍎Our partnerships with local organizations and businesses are the lifeblood of the University District Food Bank. One of our partners, the Magnuson Community Garden, works to enhance the quality of urban life and strengthen community bonds by creating and sustaining an organic garden in Sand Point Magnuson Park.

🌱This work fosters environmental stewardship, horticultural education, rejuvenation, and recreation. Through their P-Patch Food Bank Gardening program, organic produce is grown for donation to food banks and other meal programs. P-Patch Gardens city-wide grow and donate over 28,000 pounds of organic produce annually.

🍎The Magnuson Park Community Garden is one of the largest in the Seattle P-Patch system, with about a dozen food bank plots (also known as Giving Gardens) that are planted and harvested by Magnuson P-Patch volunteer gardeners specifically for donation.

🌱Between the builders of the planter boxes, the organizations donating the plants and seeds, and the volunteer gardeners and drivers, it takes the community to run this program. Thank you, Magnuson Community Garden, for supporting the U District Food Bank!

This week, we say goodbye to Home Delivery Program Coordinator Molly.

Molly has worked hard over the last two years to bring healthy, culturally relevant foods to our homebound customers. She has built strong connections with customers, staff, and volunteers alike, and she will be missed.

But rest assured, Molly will be out there working on systemic change as she heads to the London School of Economics to earn her Master of Science in the Inequalities and Social Science Program.

07/16/2024

🌟Our auction will be here before you know it. Save the date for October 19th and be on the lookout for ticket sales soon. 🌟

Thank you to the businesses who have already donated to our event. At a time of unprecedented demand for our services, rising costs and fewer food donations, support from local businesses ensures we fulfill our core purpose of creating a healthy and thriving community. Please frequent these businesses and thank them for supporting the U District Food Bank.
