My Latin American identity is an element that has become fundamental in my creations. I'm part of a voice that is often undervalued or misunderstood, and putting my culture on stage allows me to show the depth of who we are to people who don't know it, and allows those who share my heritage to reflect and celebrate who we are.

Alondra Machuca is a chilean profesional dancer and dance teacher. Oregon's First Lady of Burlesque, The Infamous Nina Nightshade is bringing THREE classes to our in-person con! Read up on them below & let us know what one your most excited about!

1. The Interactive Performer
Often burlesque performance is about interacting with the audience that came to see you and some shows don’t include a formal stage to perform on. Walking out amongst the audience can be a great way to connect and entertain. In this interactive course the Infamous Nina Nightshade will share ways to engage with the audience when out among them including audience participation, adapting to the “floor-show” environment, and how to ensure mutual consent while you do so. Come dressed to move. Bring water & note taking supplies.

2. Make Them Shiver with Antici...
Dynamic performances aren’t only about dynamic movement, they are also about dynamic stillness. In this interactive workshop, The Infamous Nina Nightshade will show you how moments of stillness and slow movements can add drama and depth to any act, no matter how upbeat the energy is. During this course we will explore the concepts of level changes, audience perception, drawing focus, and how to best utilize slow movements and moments of stillness in your performances. This 90-minute course will be a mixture of lecture and movement. Come dressed to move. Bring water, note taking supplies, and your favorite performance/practice shoes.

3. Hip Me With Your Best Shot
Classic burlesque isn’t complete without some good old fashioned bump ‘n grind, but hip movements aren’t just for the classic performer. In this course, The Infamous Nina Nightshade will teach basic hip movements & isolations including how to incorporate them into full body motion. Utilizing over 30 years of experience in various dance forms, Nina will show you how to bring the wow factor with powerful and sensual hips in this interactive movement course. Come dressed to move. Bring water & note taking supplies.

See you in November for these amazing classes!

Who is excited for some movement classes?!! Here are just two of the many offered at this years in-person convention!

Calliope Quaint loves teaching movement classes to share her insights and empower others. She’s no saint, she’s Calliope Quaint!

1. Belly Up to the Barre
Come, join us for happy hour at the barre!! The dance barre that is! Up your movement skills by focusing on leg, ankle, and foot strength and full-body alignment. This class will include a gentle warm up and then focus on floor barre and standing barre exercises. Wake up your body, stretch and strengthen your muscles, and connect your body from toe tip to the top of your head. While prior dance experience will make this class easier, the class is suitable for all experience levels and many of the exercises can be modified to be completed sitting or lying on the floor.

This will be a 55 minute class. We will spend 5-10 minutes doing gentle relaxation and warm ups for the full body. We will then do another 15 minutes on various floor barre movements, with a focus on body alignment and strengthening muscles in the legs, abs, and back. Then we will come to standing and the rest of the class will focus on standing barre movements, including foot exercises, leg lifts, kicks, pleas and releves, and stretches. We will reserve 5 minutes at the end the class for some cool-down movements and stretching.

The class objective is to learn floor and standing barre exercises to strengthen and stretch various muscle groups.

The student should wear comfortable clothes suitable for movement. No shoes are necessary.

2. Fitness Over 40
You don’t have to be over 40 to take this class! This class is geared toward developing and retaining fitness in an aging body. Developing and maintaining your muscle strength and resiliency not only makes control on the dance floor easier, but it also minimizes the likelihood of injuries and helps us navigate life tasks such as carrying your burlesque luggage (or groceries), getting up from your floorwork (or a fall), or strutting across the stage (or walking down the street).

The class is mostly movement based, with a focus on various exercises to power up various muscle groups and keep yourself going strong. Ideal for beginners to intermediates, we will take time to answer questions and provide discussions to understand the why and how of what you are doing in a simple and understandable way. For many exercises, we will provide variations on difficulty so you can focus on what your body needs and also understand next steps in your fitness journey if you want to continue these exercises.

Wear comfortable clothes for moving. Bare feet recommended. Bring a note pad and pen for notes if desired.
