Artist Highlight: Terry Crane
Performing Group Acrobatics and Duo Rope on September 14th!

About Terry: "Discovered by an intrepid pair of field botanists in the foothills of the cascades, Terry was apparently raised by a troop of errant lemurs who had escaped captivity in Woodland Park Zoo in the 1980's. Eventually mastering human speech, he attended an ordinary high school, graduating from Oberlin College, then on a lark auditioned for the National Circus School of Montréal. Thus his trajectory was sealed, as he careened from big top to chapiteau, black box to proceneum, infecting audiences with laughter and tears, by turns, and eliciting gasps when executing his stunning and original acrobatic feats on trapeze, vertical rope, slackrope, and Cyr wheel. Terry counts his dizzying spiral to circus celebrity to his love of movement, fueled by contact improvisation, capoeira, pratfalls, and dance, but doubtless ignited by his humble origins living amongst the ring-tailed primates in the wilds of the Pacific Northwest."

"This installment of Circus Etc.., will have only duos and group work in it, which is truly exciting. When you see two or more people performing together, you get a little insight into the story of their relationship, how they communicate, and how they dream together.

The GABA collective will be putting their very first performance onstage for this show, one time only. 12 acrobats will share the stage and show you how high they can climb and launch each other without so much as a chair to stand on.

Also, this is the ultimate episode of this series for the year and everyone is putting so much energy and joy into it. It will be a scintillating evening of merrymaking and celebration. So much fun!"

Announcing Sh***ri Workshops with Coach Dan & Coach Esjay!

Pseudo-suspensions aka “How To Lift Up Your Partner”
Friday September 13th at 7pm

Suspensions in rope, either partial or full, are fun and all, but sometimes you just want to throw your partner around. In this workshop, we will explore ways to move, manipulate, and person-handle your partner, all as “groundwork” without a suspension line.

Shouldering the Weight: Kinematics and Biomechanics of TKs
Saturday, September 14th at 3pm

The TK (aka gote sh***ri, box tie) is a core upper body harness in traditional Japanese Sh***ri. It is nuanced to tie, however, and numerous pitfalls can make it unsustainable in many cases. Adapting this harness to a specific person requires a thorough understanding not only of the rope itself, but also the involved anatomy.

Are you interested in learning how to do a backflip?

Join us on August 24th & 25th for Backflip Workshops with Abraham. He has developed a systematic process for learning the standing backflip which is broken down into manageable steps, many of which can be practiced on your own. Students often come away from his classes and workshops having done things they never expected were possible. While safety is always the highest priority Abraham’s teaching style is fun and playful. You should expect to work hard and learn something new while feeling safe and supported in all of his workshops.

Backflip Fundamentals
Saturday, August 24th: 12pm – 1:30pm
In this workshop, Abraham will be covering basic strength, mobility, and drills to prepare you for backflips. This workshop will be the perfect introduction to the basic movements associated with the backflip. If you have ever been interested in learning to backflip this workshop is a must! In this workshop, you will learn backflip-related strength, mobility, and drills you can practice in your own time. You will also be prepared to take the Backflip Intensive Level 1 workshop in a few months when Abraham returns to SANCA for more workshops.

Backflip Intensive Level 1
Saturday, August 24th: 2pm – 4pm
Sunday, August 25th: 1pm – 3pm
Have you always wanted to do a backflip, but never quite felt safe? Then this workshop is for you! In this intensive workshop, Abraham will take you through how to do a standing backflip. Abraham has been teaching parkour, freerunning, acrobatics and more for over 10 years. The standing backflip will be broken down into safe, manageable steps, to ensure you feel comfortable with each drill and progression. The workshop will start with mobility, activations and drills, then participants will take turns working up to spotted backflips. Abraham teaches backflip using the two-person spotting method. Participants can expect to complete assisted standing backflips by the end of the workshop and occasionally students complete unassisted backflips. The workshop is limited to eight spots to accommodate lots of specific work with each participant.

Artist Highlight: Audax Alea
Performing Object Manipulation (poi) in Student Etc. Cabaret | Summer Vibes on August 10th!

"Introducing Audax Alea, an artist who should probably go back to school and get a real job! After a misspent youth covered in gymnastics chalk and spinning colorguard sabers, Audax was kidnapped by a fire dancing troupe and learned the art of poi, staff, and fire eating and breathing. After escaping pyro captivity, Audax traveled the world collecting artistic trinkets from the drag and burlesque scenes of the Twin Cities, circus arts of Chicago, and the dreams of Paris. Now emerging in the Emerald City, Audax is ready to bring a preposterous mix of circus, nerddom, parody, and tomfoolery to the stages of Seattle!" .alea
