Contact lens wearers! If you are having issues or discomfort, don’t give up.

Here are some common causes of contact lens discomfort:

Eye dryness- you may be using the wrong contact lens solution. Lubricating eye drops can help. Ask your eye doctor for the correct drops for your contacts!

Allergies- could be those pesky indiana seasonal allergies, but it also could be a reaction to the contacts themselves

Fit- everyone’s eyes are different, so not all contacts will feel good on your eyes

Something is on the lens- keep those contacts clean!

Other conditions not related to the contact- could be conjunctivitis. If you are worried about an eye conduction, it’s probably best to keep the contacts out until you see your eye doctor.

Optimap retinal imaging!

This machine takes a picture of the retina in the eye. It’s non-invasive and takes a few seconds to complete.

Why is it important?
Traditional retinal imaging only covers about 15% of the retina, a very small portion. Optomap covers over 80% of the retina!

Call the office for questions or ask about it during your visit!

We have a full frame room with plenty of name brand options! Come on in and take a look at our glasses, sunglasses, and contact lenses. No obligation to buy, but of course we would love it if you did! 😉

This week will focus on Dr. Nate’s office and different services that are offered!

First up the Eye exam process!

After checking in and filling out necessary paperwork, our lovely tech will es**rt you to your first stop; the offering of the optomap. Next she will test eye pressure for glaucoma, perform an auto refraction to get an estimate of any needs for prescription, and test your visual field looking for any abnormalities.

After that she will es**rt you to the exam room where she will test acuity, depth perception, eye muscle movement, and pupil response. All of this before Dr. Nate even comes in! Our techs are awesome!

Then Dr. Nate will come in and perform his exam by checking refraction again to check for prescription needs and then checking your eye health.

He will answer any questions or concerns you may have, hopefully give you a clean bill of eye health, but in the event there is further needs, that will be discussed.

After that you are done! Dr. Nate will walk you out to the front desk to check out.

A pengun!

Okay I laughed a little too much at this one!

Optic nerves:

Your optic nerve is the connection that lets your eyes send signals to your brain describing what they detect.

Your brain takes those signals, processes them and uses them to construct the picture you see.

There is one optic nerve for each eye.

Optic neuritis occurs when swelling (inflammation) damages the optic nerve. Common symptoms of optic neuritis include pain with eye movement and temporary vision loss in one eye.

It’s important to be seen soon, so there is no permanent nerve damage.

07/17/2024

Retina:

The retina is a thin layer of tissue that lines the back of the eye on the inside. It is located near the optic nerve.

The purpose of the retina is to receive light that the lens has focused, convert the light into neural signals, and send these signals on to the brain for visual recognition.

A common disorder of the retina is a retinal detachment. Most commonly occurring with injury or again. The detachment itself is painless. But if it is not treated immediately, there can be permanent vision loss!

warning signs include:
⚫️The sudden appearance of many floaters — tiny specks that seem to drift through your field of vision
⚫️Flashes of light in one or both eyes
⚫️Blurred vision
⚫️Gradually reduced side (peripheral) vision
⚫️A curtain-like shadow over your field of vision

Call your eye doctor immediately if you experience any of these signs!

07/16/2024

Lens:

Behind the pupil, there is a transparent structure called a lens. With the help of certain eye muscles, the lens changes its shape to focus light on the retina.

It becomes thinner to focus on distant objects and becomes thicker to focus on the nearby objects. It also works together with the cornea to refract, or bend, light.

Sometimes we need some extra lenses (glasses or contacts) to assist with vision! 👓

07/15/2024

Continuing on this week with parts of the eye….

Pupil:

A small opening in the iris is known as a pupil. The function of the pupil is to allow light to enter the eye so it can be focused on the retina to begin the process of sight. 👀

Typically, the pupils appear perfectly round, equal in size and black in color. If they do not appear that way…..you should probably get that checked out!

Cataracts can cause a cloudy appearance of the pupil.

P.S. it’s Dr. Nate’s birthday!

Eye know you’ve all been waiting for cornea joke day!!

What’s an optometrists’ favorite type of food?

🍝🍕

“Eye-talian”

🍕🍝

I’ll be better next week….

07/11/2024

The Iris:

A dark muscular tissue and ring-like structure behind the cornea is known as the iris. The color of the iris actually indicates the color of the eye. The iris also controls how big or small your pupil gets!

Just like fingerprints, every iris is different and unique to you! Even your right and left iris aren’t exactly the same. 🤯🤯

07/10/2024

Next up: Cornea

The front transparent part of the sclera is called the cornea. Light enters the eye through the cornea. Important functions of cornea in the eye include protecting the structures inside the eye, contributing to the refractive power of the eye, and focusing light rays on the retina.

The cornea is very sensitive, so any abrasions, big or small, can be extremely painful. No cornea jokes about it! Your eye doctor can help with repairing.

07/09/2024

First up: the sclera ⚪️

It is the outer covering, a protective tough white layer made of fibrous tissue. It extends from the cornea (the clear front section of the eye) to the optic nerve at the back of the eye. The sclera gives the eyeball its white color.

The sclera is the supporting wall for your eyeball. It maintains your eye’s shape and protects it from injuries.

There are a lot of conditions that can affect the color of the sclera. Other than white, common colors include red and yellow. If you notice any changes in color, contact your eye doctor, especially if there is pain.
