National Navajo Code Talkers Day honors the contributions of Native American service members who used their native language as "code talkers" to communicate important information over military radios in the U.S. military during World Wars I and II. Please join WDVA in remembering and honoring the service of code talkers in service to our state and nation.
We also want to shine a light on Wisconsin's tribal servicemembers who served as code talkers during WWII. Today's image is from a 1941 photograph of Ho-Chunk Nation servicemembers who were code talkers in the Wisconsin National Guard. The photo is part of the collection at the Wisconsin Veterans Museum. Members of Wisconsin's Ojibwe nations were also code talkers in the 32nd Infantry Division in the South Pacific, using the Ojibwe language to communicate important information and confound the enemy.
