On this day in 1957, the War Memorial Center was dedicated “To Honor the Dead by Serving the Living.” Finnish American architect Eero Saarinen designed the building to house a veterans memorial and to combine the Milwaukee Art Institute and the Layton Art Gallery into the Milwaukee Art Center, which officially became the Milwaukee Art Museum in 1980.
