Karate is very much an individual endeavor but that doesn’t mean we do it alone!! We work together as friends and classmates in a community of mutual trust, respect, and support.

VShrews has three candidates preparing for this month’s Regional Black Belt test and yeah, we’ll wish them good luck because it’s kind and respectful to do so. Do they need it? Probably not.

Our students are confident and prepared. They know that what gets you through this test isn’t talent or perfection but perseverance and acceptance. They have the humility to understand who they are, what they can do, how to learn from their mistakes, and how to celebrate their accomplishments.

A Black Belt is just a White Belt who never gave up.

In Sparring Class this week, we used floor markers to learn our distances. Punching distance? 🥊 Good place to punch from. Kicking distance? 🦵 Great place for kicking. Out of range? Safe… as long as No One Moves 😏

Ready, set, Gooooo! Tots Tug-o-War teaches the importance of solid stances. Cuz if you don’t stand strong, you fall right down.

We’ve got the rainy Saturday sleepies in the Teen class so instead of hard work, we’re doing fun work. Make your own agility course!

Tragedy in the Tots class this morning: the floor was lava!!! Friends helped friends cross the squishy bridge. Other friends fell in and were eaten by the lava monster. Miraculously, everyone survived.

May is Dojo Pride Month fam!

Did you know that Pride and Humility are not opposites? Being proud of who you are and what you can do PLUS knowing that you don’t know everything and can always improve EQUALS….. Self-Confidence! (There’s quite a bit of self-awareness in that equation as well).

Today I gave the Teen class a choice: on one side, you can make up some open hand/finger strikes on BOBs head and neck. On the other, fight your demons. All the girls chose demons (and Woofry was right there with them).

Shout out to the Child class for continuing to choose Awesomeness this week after last week’s chaos.

I know this LOOKS like chaos but it was a very productive belt-tying lesson. We learned two ways to tie a belt and almost everyone managed to do so completely on their own!!
