Pasture raised chickens really are special. Chicken is the number 1 protein source consumed by Americans but we don’t think about where it comes from nearly enough. A well raised fresh chicken not only tastes better, it’s easier to cook!

Soooo…we had an extremely busy week which was all planned and nearly perfectly coordinated. That was until yesterday when we discovered one of our gilts was pregnant and due right away. She managed to elude our checks for months. After some very quick fence building and maneuvering we got her in a stall yesterday and today right in the middle of chicken processing had a beautiful litter.

I truly don’t know how we missed this, but if there’s one thing I can always say about animals is that they will always keep you humble!

I had never heard of pasture rotating chickens before we started raising our own. Most small farmers choose this method simply due to the fact they can create a quality product and maintain healthy birds. Many question how that impacts the quality of the end product.

The truth is: Pasture rotation significantly enhances the health of chickens by providing them with access to fresh grass, diverse vegetation, and insects, fostering stronger immune systems and overall well-being. Secondly, it helps sustainable farming practices by mitigating soil erosion, improving biodiversity, and reducing dependency on harmful chemicals like artificial fertilizers and pesticides, thereby benefiting the environment. Lastly, offering chickens ample space and natural conditions to express their behaviors, ultimately promoting their happiness and welfare is just plain ethical.

SO Simple You'll Always Do This Yourself! Pro Butcher HOW TO Cut Up A CHICKEN - Glen And Friends 05/02/2024

I often get asked, "What do you do with a whole chicken?" It's one of those things that society and the grocery industry have accustomed us to. We just don't buy whole chickens anymore. Although recently there has been an uptick in the interest of saving money and being able to buy quality meat. Well, here is our favorite video on how to cut up whole chickens.

Once you get into a rhythm it is easy. I recommend buying 4 or 5 chickens at a time and let yourself find that rhythm. We stock our own freezer year-round with breasts, thighs, drums, wings, and of course whole birds.

So I have to share this story. Last week one of our gilts was apparently bored so she decided to climb the rail and pull down our camera. We’ve had this camera out in the barn for farrowing for several years and never had an issue…but pigs will be pigs. So one night the camera goes dark. All I find is a shaky last image before it completely went out. The next morning I go searching in her pen but I expected it to be lost in mud forever. Well lo and behold I found it in her bed area. It had teeth marks, been stepped on, and was packed full of dirt. I cleaned it out and put it into a bag of rice for a few days. Guess what!? It still works great. I can’t hardly believe it but I guess it’s a testament to the durability of Blink outdoor cameras.
