Honoring service

Veterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, is a U.S. holiday which originally honored service members who served during World War I. The name was officially changed after World War II and the Korean War when veterans asked U.S. Congress to change the day’s name from “Armistice Day” to “Veterans Day” in order to acknowledge the sacrifices made by all service members during war and peace.

Today we honor all veterans. Thank you for your service.

Today, we remember the 76th anniversary of D-Day:
Codenamed Operation Overlord, the Battle of Normandy, began on June 6, 1944, also known as D-Day.

Roughly 156,000 American, British, and Canadian forces landed on five beaches along a 50-mile stretch of the heavily fortified coast of France’s Normandy region. This resulted in the Allied liberation of Western Europe from N**i Germany's control.

One notable aspect of today’s ceremony was the date. Falling on the 78th anniversary of the Doolittle Raid, the occasion was a chance to pause and reflect on the historic and continued importance of America’s Airpower mission. It was also a day to look to the future as the Class of 2020 commissioned 86 officers into the United States Space Force.
