The South Dakota Department of Health asks medical providers to be alert for an introduction of measles into South Dakota among recent travelers. In 2024, cases have been identified in Georgia, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Persons traveling internationally may also be at increased risk if visiting a country with a measles outbreak. Measles was last identified in South Dakota during 2015.
If you suspect measles, isolate the patient to a room, adhere to infection control guidelines, and immediately call SDDOH at 800-592-1861 to report the illness. Infection control guidelines are available here: https://www.cdc.gov/infectioncontrol/guidelines/measles/index.html

We are remembering Susan Anderson, MD, who passed away last week. Dr. Anderson joined the SDSMA Board of Directors in 2019 and served in the positions of at-large director, secretary-treasurer and vice president. She was an inspiration and a dedicated family physician whose countless efforts have enhanced the medical profession, patient care, and medical education in South Dakota.
As executive dean at USD Sanford School of Medicine and leader of the Frontier & Rural Medicine (FARM) Program, Dr. Anderson was passionate about her work to increase the number of primary care physicians in rural areas of the state. She was a recipient of the SDSMA Young at Heart Award and named Family Doctor of the Year by the South Dakota Academy of Family Physicians.
She inspired so many young physicians and students to do great things. We extend our deepest condolences to Dr. Anderson’s family and friends. Her passing is an incredible loss. Read about her life and funeral arrangements here: https://www.kinzleyfh.com/obituary/susan-anderson
The only cure for Medicare payment mess is wholesale reform Congress again has failed to stop Medicare physician pay cuts. Comprehensive, long-term changes that protect patients’ access to care are long overdue.
