Black Dog Club

Black Dog Club

Black Dog Club is a non-profit animal rescue and sanctuary. Our primary goal is to promote the adoption of rescued shelter pets into new forever homes.

https://www.amazon.com/registry/wishlist/1EABJ4053ARSA/ Here at Black Dog Club, we love all animals regardless of color, breed, or species. We maintain a 6 acre farm that consists of cats, dogs, horses, chickens, and whatever else strays up to the house or barn. Our eventual goal is to build a large environmentally controlled kennel on the back 40 to support a true "NO KILL" shelter. Baby steps...

The crime. The evidence. The culprit.
We love Cindy even if she steals some snacks.

Anyone on here watch "Alone?" If not, I totally recommend!

If so, I'm NOT tapping out but I am getting out of here for at least a week. So tired of the minute by minute calls of folks trying to surrender pets. I just can't even this week with the phone calls/emails/PMs/etc. Our website and social media accounts ALL say we don't take strays or owner surrenders but I guess folks think that their situation might be different...it is not. No, we do not accept cat or kittens.

We pull from kill shelters. Period. We do not accept strays. Period. We do not accept owner surrenders. Period. We do not accept the dog that is living in crappy conditions in your neighborhood. Period. It's not that we do not care...it's that we are limited to 25 rescue dogs. That includes our sanctuary friends.

The reasons below.

1. Every shelter has a firm FHD which includes a specific time. (FHD is final hold date.) If I take your pet/stray/neighbors dog...that means a dog is going to die. We pulled one on Friday at exactly 4pm that would have died if I took your project. Literally, 1 minute from euthanasia.

2. The shelters that I know and trust send me dogs that are medically sound. I can't tell you the number of times that we did an intake from a shelter that has lied to us about medical issues. We are small but mighty...we must know what we are pulling in due to financial restraints.

3. The shelters that I know and trust send me dogs that are temperament tested/sound. Regardless of your personal opinion, not ALL dogs are safe for placement. (Sometimes...if not most times, it is not the way they were raised but genetics.) I will never knowingly intake/outtake a dog that will bite a human...ever. Even other aggression issues are questionable as they can lead to a human bite, be aggression that stems from other dogs, cats, kids, chickens, goats, horses, etc. We temp test everything here~ I don't expect that from shelters but at least don't lie to us about breed or personality. If you lie to us, we will never pull from your organization again.

I (Dawn) will be out of pocket for at least the next week. Maybe a bit longer. Yes, Ruby Maultsby will be here to take care of all things rescue. I seriously just need a break. It's been a few years and I'm exhausted.

Thinking about the tonight. Karen Hylton Skandier sent us (her entire team) voicemails most every Friday. We were all on the road, all over the state...and we were all car dancing to the best music ever thanks to those messages!! That and the funniest golf game ever!! You my lady are the entire package!! I miss you everyday. Wish I didn't suck so much at leaving the farm.

Long post but great info for sponsors/adopters/boarders!!

We had a surprise Ag inspection today. All is wonderful.

https://apps.ncagr.gov/AgRSysPortalV2/licensesearch (Screenshot on how to search inspection reports attached and link included) Our cert number is 386.

Black Dog Club is the ONLY private, North Carolina Department of Agriculture licensed/inspected, indoor/outdoor animal rescue facility in Johnston County!! Only one other facility exists and they are outdoor only. We are a huge county and need many more. If you are considering starting/operating a rescue, please reach out!! I will help you anyway possible. We do not receive any government funding. We only exist/operate because of donors/sponsors!!!

The yearly application is intense and must be signed/approved by a vet. That means our vets know we provide the best care possible. As such, running day to day operations is not cheap and we truly appreciate our monthly business and private donors. We could NOT do this without each of you!! Yes, my dogs are spoiled but they've been through hell and deserve all of the luxuries possible until they find their forever homes.

Please note that this application/approval process applies to boarding facilities as well so before you turn your dog over to someone you don't know and trust, please verify they are licensed/inspected. NO, ROVER does not count!! Nor do folks on your Next-door or community social media pages. Just about anyone can claim to "board" dogs. That does NOT mean the person is properly trained to handle meds, medical emergencies, temperamental dogs, etc....

The mission at BDC is and always will be to provide the best possible care for the animals in our community that need the most help. That is the animals on death row in high kill shelters. All of the folks here treat every animal like they are our own.

Love you all, mean it!! Thanks so much for your continued support.

As always, please feel free to call or email if you have questions. I totally suck at responding to IMs and FB messages. Dogs come first ;)

We could really use your help with this crazy summer heat!! I've updated the Amazon Wish list with pet shades and splash pools for the exercise runs. The rescue has tried several times to use canopies but the weather around here is nuts as you all know. A pop up storm has destroyed several expensive tents over the years. We would love to have a NC Dept. of Ag approved permanent cover but they are just way too expensive. The pups can also use water toys to help keep cool. You guys/gals are the best and never disappoint. If you can't afford an entire tent or pad, can you make a donation via our FB page and notate that it is for this specific request?

https://a.co/1nFgYhT

Blackdog Club Black Dog Club focuses our efforts towards dogs that are considered special needs. As such, the vet bills here tend to be quite high. On average, we spend 2k-5k per month. Any amount helps. Please feel free to call the vets directly to make a donation or via the link below. ALL funds go directly to....

Hello BDC friends! πŸ‘‹πŸ» πŸ•β€πŸ¦ΊπŸΎ

Another exciting week here at the rescue. πŸ”₯

We had a special visit from our favorite animal doctor and got to make new friends and learn a lot of interesting things! πŸ΄πŸπŸ“

Part of the visit featured one of our lovely red roosters that came down with a bout of bumble foot and so we thought we would share some pictures of Doc Loyd and our amazing Dawn treating his little foot! πŸ”πŸ©Ί

🚨✨Also, if you are looking for a reliable, thorough, honest, and incredibly friendly mobile vet in the Smithfield and surrounding areas, please consider Doc Loyd! (Her information is listed below πŸ‘‡πŸΌβœ¨πŸš¨

Today is National Mutt Day! Show us your pups!

Nothing to see here folks...just another day at BDC lol. This is too funny not to share and as much as we don't like to ask for cash donations here, we are asking in the sake of Carolina Waterfowl Rescue. Link: https://www.paypal.com/fundraiser/charity/12904?fbclid=IwY2xjawET0K1leHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHY85jciy0X56FttEEbhJ59t0JVIFSG8ceqyopv8hVYW1EiZQm77-taao3Q_aem_EF5vvX51HsRWvssCsKQZGw

So here you go....hubby claims he hates the rescue but when returning from an errand, he finds an injured bird on our driveway. Ruby Maultsby, Jennifer McKinley and I head down to help him out. Of course, we can't go anywhere with Hailey joining us for a ride.

Jen and Ruby were both like Nope lol. Finally convinced Ruby to help me get the baby cornered and got him loaded in the car. He was calm down the driveway but lost his mind when we got to the gate. Bernie as he is now named proceeded to grab poor Hailey by the ear and then latched on to Jen's hand. She now has multiple Band-Aids and a hurt ego.

We reached out to Carolina Waterfowl for help. They wanted us to transport to Charlotte area which is impossible for us. They sent a transporter and he is now on his way to the vet for treatment.

Jen keeps asking people if they've ever been bitten by a crane cause she now has a story. Yes, understand not a crane but still so funny.

Please send Bernie all your thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery and return to the wild where he belongs!! Yep, hubby got Captain Crunch for dinner cause I didn't have time to cook.

On Sunday, July 21st between 2-6PM, Blackdog Club and our girl scout gold award participant, Sami Deaton, will be hosting a dog wash for both our adoptable dogs and any followers that would like a dog bath for their personal pet(s) here at the rescue. This will be donation based, no charge. We are trying to raise money for our vet bill and Sami is working towards her badge and her goal is to educate potential adopters on items they should consider and account for prior to adopting a forever friend. She put together a wonderful Pinterest board that will be shared during the event.

We are accepting appointments in 20 minute intervals. We will brush and bathe dogs as well as trim nails. No A**l glands. Again, donation based for the groom but the goal it to help Sami earn her gold award by educating the public to prepare for dog adoption so they are not surrendered afterwards. Please call 984-249-4999 for an appointment.

Thanks so much for reading and we hope to see a few of you here. Let us know if you have any questions.

This!!

NON RIDERS TAKE NOTE!!!!!
Riders know this, but the general public may not be awre. If you have never been part of a benefit ride you should know at least this:
Bikers PAY to ride. Something they could do for free. But they choose to pay to ride, the fee can be anywhere between $10 to $20 or $30 per person. Not only do they pay to ride, they usually drop a lot of cash for the extras. Raffles, 50/50, and silent auctions, even Toy Runs for kids....
When you see a group ride by, they are probably riding for charity/great causes/benefits! Instead of gettng upset because they blocked traffic or caused you a slight delay, please remember this: They are very generous people!!!
Give them space and your patience. It sometimes helps to have a little reminder about things. So please be patient and smile when you see them because they are doing something good for someone you may know, or for a good cause.

Hi team. We have a few needs if anyone can help. As you all know, adoptions are down and our shelter is at maximum capacity. Funds are limited so every item helps us remain in business.
We have the items we need on our amazon wish list; however, you can order from Walmart or where ever you shop from and ship to Blackdog Club: 1000 Freedom Road, Smithfield, NC 27577. We truly appreciate the continued support from our community.

1. We are in dire need of 2 new laundry baskets. Amazon prices are crazy!!!
2. We are down to our last Wysiwash tablet. This is our biggest need right now. Not a cheap item for sure but we use several times a day.
3. Dryer Sheets
4. 1 Gallon Zip Lock freezer bags. Name brand does NOT matter.

Thanks in advance!!

My whole heart is breaking tonight. My Blue will go to the vet tomorrow to get help crossing the bridge.

Sweet Blue came to me as an emaciated pup many moons ago. He is now...or in his recent prime...a 110 lb. Blue Dobbie. His coat was always horrid! He is what is called a diluted coat Doberman which should NOT exist. It is 100% genetic. This is what you get when you BUY a dog from a POS backyard breeder. I didn't buy him, I donated 2 bags of Ol' Roy dog food with the condition that he came home to the rescue. No puppy coming with me, no food!

Blue cannot be outside in long periods during the heat of the day or during long, winter days. He either burns or he freezes. Blue loves everyone unless they pose a threat to me. Not mean at all but super protective. Blue can get along with anything from a mean ass 5 lb. chihuahua up to a dog his size. He loves and adores children.

Blue is how I met the wonderful folks at Sally Said So! Professional Dog Training. I knew early on he was going to be HUGE and I back in the day, I needed guidance. Shane worked with us and it seriously only took one lesson for me to be able to guide him on...he is that smart!! I am now a diehard Doberman advocate.

I may be offline for a few days as tomorrow be one of the hardest days of my life. I will love you forever my sweet boy. My room will be so empty without your big pony sized crate.

Love!!

05/25/2024

I can typically get a dog to love me in a few days these 2 were the exception to that rule! Neither showed any interest in us so their fate was put out into the rescue world. Thankfully Wake County Animal Center Transfer Partners and I played a game of let's make a deal. We took the great Pyrenees missing a foot and in exchange, they found a rescue willing to work with this pair. Thank you so much to Neshama Animal Rescue for agreeing to work with this pair.

We happened upon a crew of 15 chihuahuas and chi/pom mixes that need to be rehomed as the owner passed away. We went on site and found them to be not adoptable at this time due to social skills. Anyone on here willing to foster a small dog that may be a jerk for awhile? Need experienced, patient handlers. I have 6 here. Most weigh 6-10 lbs with 100 lbs of anger πŸ˜† 2 can be handled, 2 need a week or two of attention, 2 will bite the hell out of you. I know this from personal experience lol. Need a few fosters that love a good challenge.

Photos from Black Dog Club's post 05/23/2024

A huge thanks to the wonderful donors from Thales Academy for the generous donations!! The pups are so happy with the treats and toys. Our volunteers today stuffed kongs and make tortilla/peanut butter pallets. We seriously couldn't do all of this without our supporters. Enrichment is so critical in a rescue dog's healing process!!

If you are a potential adopter, volunteer, Day Away foster or adopter and you came on a Saturday or Sunday the past few years, you know our Ruby Red!! She has been with us for years and knows every aspect of the rescue. I'm stoked for her and want to send congrats to the ONE person that has kept me sane/sound since she joined us. SHE is the reason that I'm a firm believer in our youth volunteer program. If you are a rescue and you are not letting young adults volunteer....you are missing the boat!!!! Ruby Maultsby..I am so very proud of you and the woman you have become. Gone is the timid girl that I first met. You have grown into such an amazing lady! I look forward to seeing what life brings to you and what you bring to life. Ruby recently learned to play darts with the other ladies of the BDC Mutt Crew team so here is a pic of all of us celebrating her graduation from High School/Early College. We all love you with our whole hearts. You will make a huge impact for whatever organization you end up with. They will be lucky to have you.
