White Canes🦯🦯 for Two: Augustina & Her Brother*

After a year and eight months, relief finally arrived for Augustina and her brother when they received not just a white cane, but a world of possibilities. This newfound independence brought:

- Eyes to navigate the world
- A cane to replace the stick
- The ability to achieve independence
- A way to raise awareness and encourage onlookers to care for the visually impaired

I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to CoCorpsAfrica/Ghanaor the opportunity to serve as an African volunteer in Anweem Junction, under KEEA in the Central region of Ghana. It was during one of my youth meetings that I met Augustina, and later, her family, as my volunteer service progressed.

I also want to thank the USUS Embassy, Accra, Ghanaor selecting me as one of 32 fellows out of 3,000 applicants for the 2024 MaMandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaderswhich celebrated its 10th anniversary. This incredible opportunity allowed me to learn, network, and ultimately connect with Augustina's and her brother's helper, who made it possible for us to obtain these white canes. I cannot forget my host Institute KaKansas State Universityrecisely StStaley School of Leadershipor the great teachings.

Sadly, nine years after completing senior high school, we are still working to help Augustina achieve her dream of attending university. I am committed to supporting her goal of becoming a graduate – specifically, a lawyer. We would be grateful for your support in making this dream a reality.

*Join us in EMPOWERING AUGUSTINA'S future! Come one, come all!*

💭Assistance Dogs🐶🦮🐕‍🦺??
These are dogs specially trained to become aiders to the person living with a disability aimed at making their lives less stressful as a result of their disability.Guiding,hearing ,medical alert, PTSD Veteran dogs etc

Assistance Dog Week is celebrated each year on the first Sunday in August, and in 2024, it runs from August 4th –August 10th.

To recognize and raise awareness about the amazing work of these dogs.
For example;
1. Providing mobility aid♿👨🏻‍🦯
2. Guiding the visually impaired 🔝🔙↕️↔️
3. Detecting allergies💭
4. Emotional support🫂
5. Opening doors/picking up falling items

To end, its my own firsthand experience with James and his assistance dog . It was such an opportunity to appreciate what training (conditioning ) of a dog can do to a life;

So let us, as humans be NICE 👌and as INCLUSIVE as we can be towards persons with disabilities.

Inclusivity is the goal. Where from today PWDs will have a 360(full) just to mention a few.

To achieve this, we call on:

Governments: To enact inclusive policies and equally ensure systemic recognition for such policies.

NGOs/CBOs: Desist from using PWDs as objects to raise funds to enrich themselves

Societies: To ensure beyond the families where these PWDs come from, the society become that macro safe haven for PWDs to feel accepted to grow

Families: Must ensure that the family, which the first society the child(with/without disability ) comes to know first is indeed an enabling space for lessing the impact of their disability.

Researchers : To help pin 📍 down with empirical facts the mega trends that need policy enforcement.

IT Experts: To ensure technological inclusion with AI trends

What is Braille💭?
It is a form of written language for blind people, in which characters are represented by patterns of raised dots that are felt with the fingertips.

*WHAT YOU DIDN'T KNOW*
World Braille Day every year on January 4th marks Louis Braille’s birthday. He’s the *inventor of braille* ! Louis was born in 1809 in *France* and became blind after a childhood accident. As a result he mastered his new way of living. When Louis was only 15 years old, he created a reading and writing system based on Charles Barbier’s night writing system. We know Louis’ system today as braille.

World Braille Day is a reminder of the importance of accessibility and independence for people who are blind or visually impaired.

This day spreads awareness about braille and other accessible forms of communication. Everyone deserves the same accommodations and services, regardless of ability.
Let’s remember that and do our part to make our workplaces more accessible for everyone.

Today’s reality is that many establishments,have a lot to do in creating *inclusion* and also to enforce the *Disability bill, 2023(Act 44 & 48).*

For example;

i. Restaurants, banks, and hospitals, don’t offer braille versions of their print materials like menus, statements, and bills.

ii. Newspapers are not in braille forms

iii. Rent or tenancy agreements are not in braille

iv. Terminal report of wards to visually impaired parents not in braille

v. Birth certificate or maps are not in braille

Because of the above, people with blindness or visual impairments often *don’t have the freedom to choose a meal on their own or keep their finances or medical conditions private*.

Me: It means policy formulation (PWDs Bill, 2023), implementation/practicalization through infrastructure and systematic reforms (eg. Well resourced and functioning Inclusive center/schools) and evidence beneficiary testimonies of the effectiveness of the inclusive system.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN DAY: IWD

The conception of this special day by Activist Theresa Malkiel was for the good and passion to celebrate motherhood. But today, what do we see? Nothing short of myths, barriers and stereotypes against the womb that carried you for 9month, hawked to feed, cloth and educate you.

This year marks the 112th Anniversary of the celebration. This tells us that, the good in this "Day" is greater than your "disability of a bad attitude" in the form of gender based violence against women and the girl child.

At DisabilityLens, we celebrate motherhood and sisterhood with focus on the mother /sister figure with the crutches🩼🩼, on the Wheelchair🦽, with a whitecane🧑🏻‍🦯 just to mention a few, who have not given up on and . So why are you, you and you not a celebrator but rather a discriminator against motherhood.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE WHEELCHAIR
(1st - 3rMarch2023)
International Wheelchair Day is an annual celebration falling on March 1st. It was first launched in 2008 to draw attention to the most important mobility device in history and the positive profound impact wheelchairs have on people's lives(Especially the physically impaired/challenged). Due to one of the following mobility impairments: amputations, paralysis, spinal cord injuries, Cerebral Palsy, Multiple Sclerosis, Muscular Dystrophy, and more. According to the Wheelchair Foundation, it is estimated that 1% of the population in developed countries require a wheelchair, and 95% of them have access to one.

Farfler’s(the 1st wheelchair Inventor) Self-propelled hand crank wheelchair at the age of 22 years invention was initially to serve a personal need, but in the future(250 YEARS later), Stephan Farfler's wheelchair became the miracle to world with some modifications.

It’s no surprise that the wheelchair is one of the most popular mobility aids, a wheelchair enables great minds like the lives of: Stephen Hawking(Mathematician), Nick Vujicic(Renounced Speaker), Ivor GreenStreet(Politician), Barbara Jordan(Lawyer), Aaron Fothering(Athlete) and Christopher Reeves(Film Director) among others to get out and explore the world with the greatest impact. Thanks to the lightweight qualities of a wheelchair, they did not just get on the trains, planes, buses, and cars.But they took the world stage and showed the world, what "they are made of sitting in the Wheelchair.

To end, from we appeal to schools, workplaces, hospitals, recreational centers to have a disability friendly and an enabling environment for PWDs(Persons living with disabilities).

Disability lens VALENTINE DAY MSG.
(14TH FEBRUARY, 2023)❤‍🔥

Valentine’s Day commemorates Saint Valentine, who became a hero of (during times of war) to make couple unite in LOVE🤍❤️ even at the POINT of imprisonment & death. And today we celebrate this love💞with 1,001 forms of discrimination against PWDs(Persons With Disabilities) just to mention a few;

1.Forced isolation for people with disabilities.

2.Doctors advising parents to skip life-saving medical intervention for babies with disabilities.

3. Depriving PWDs the opportunity to make friends or form romantic partnerships.

4. Forced sterilization for PWDs

5.Infringing on the social and romantic freedom of PWDs etc.

People with disabilities today, are still struggling for their rights to form and experience the types of relationships that we all treasure and are buying the chocolates🍫🍫 and roses💐💐 for.

We do celebrate DAY today through education for all to desist from the " *ILL-LOVE SYNDROME "* towards PWDs.

People of all abilities should have the freedom and be supported to find meaningful relationships with whomever they choose.

’scelebrate
forms of love,
different abilities.

🤼CHILDREN MENTAL HEALTH WEEK

I sat by my window holding my jotter and pen and not knowing what to write after hours.......I finally decided to ✍️✍️✍️✍️✍️✍️✍️👇

The world 🌍 view over childhood as tabular rasa(empty/blank slate) with no conflict, cognitive stress or threshold to be reached is held in high esteem. But little do we know children can become "VICTIMS OF MENTAL HEALTH" issues resulting from poor environmental feeds, poor parenting environment and a misconception that children are " miniature adult" for that they should be treated like small adult is a time bomb for the mental state of the future of these children.

From society, I knew early enough, that there are many mistreats and abuses of the girl-boy child of tomorrow but the truth is, all are born to be nurtured onto greatness, not to be weak and vulnerable.
Therefore, to give that child a chance to grow up, and to have a say concerning life is to;
1.Create an Enabling Environment
2. Provide quality Education
3.Equip them with Coping skills
4.Teach children to SpeakUp
5.Be a FRIEND
