CMS has proposed a rule to increase Medicare payments for end-stage renal disease (ESRD) facilities in 2025. A rise of 2.2% in Medicare payments for ESRD facilities in 2025, with hospital-based facilities receiving a 3.9% boost and freestanding facilities a 2.1% increase are some of the proposed changes.

The proposal expands ESRD outlier services, updates payment amounts, and introduces a two-tiered low-volume payment adjustment (LVPA) system. Oral-only renal dialysis drugs will be included in the ESRD PPS bundled payment system by 01 January 2025.

CMS is phasing out financial assistance for providers whose Medicare payments were disrupted by the Change Healthcare cyberattack. Effective July 12, 2024, CMS will no longer accept requests for advanced payments.

CMS has provided $2.55 billion in advanced payments to Medicare Part A providers and $717.2 million to Part B providers, with 96% of advanced payments repaid. Additionally, UnitedHealth Group, the owner of Change Healthcare has contributed $6 billion in assistance. Providers experiencing ongoing billing or payment issues are advised to contact Change Healthcare directly.

U.S. Lawmakers have reintroduced a bill aiming to reform the Medicare Advantage prior authorization process. The updated version of the Improving Senior's Timely Access to Care Act aims to streamline the authorization process and codify provisions to ensure seniors get the care they need. The bill would reduce administrative burdens, increase transparency, and enhance patient care.

130 members of the House of Representatives and 42 members of the Senate sponsored the bill. Furthermore, the bill is supported by over 370 national and state organizations representing patients, physicians, Medicare advantage plans, hospitals, and other key stakeholders in the health care industry.
