VOTING is one of the best ways to take action and protect the Freedom to Read! We will have a voter registrar on duty at our Book Social on Sunday so if you know someone who needs to REGISTER TO VOTE, please bring them along! Students who will be 18 by November 5th can register. You can also check your voter registration and make sure you are ready for November! 🇺🇸
It's , and in Texas, book bans are on the rise! Did you know that Texas leads the nation in banned books, with over 800 titles removed from shelves in the last two years? These books cover important topics like race, LGBTQ+ identities, and history -- stories that deserve to be told.

ALA's Office for Intellectual Freedom documented 1,247 demands to censor library books and resources in 2023. The number of titles targeted for censorship surged 65% in 2023 compared to 2022, reaching the highest levels ever documented by OIF in more than 20 years of tracking: 4,240 unique book titles were targeted for removal from schools and libraries. These are most challenged, including reasons cited for censoring the books.

On March 14, 2024, the American Library Association released data and statistics about book bans in the United States in 2023. The number of unique titles challenged shattered last year's records. Today marks the start of Banned Book Week. Throughout the week, we will share information and resources to get educated and TAKE ACTION! UniteAgainstBookBans.org is a great place to start -- tons of data and resources.

Celebrate Southlake was tons fun! We had so many community members stop by to chat, decorate book marks and paint our Little Free Library! We’ll be celebrating the Freedom to Read all month so be sure to follow us for more events!
We are celebrating Banned Book Week (9/22-28) with a "Let Freedom Read Social" at Talking Animals Bookstore! Talking Animals Books has generously offered to donate 10% of proceeds to Texas Freedom to Read Project. We will have wine and other refreshments as well as door prizes, banned book trivia and swag. Book lovers of all ages are welcome! This event is co-sponsored by Dignity for All Texas Students, Keller ISD Families For Public Education & Protect GCISD .
