"Early on in my farming career, a farmer mom insisted Jake and I start planning for how we'd keep me relevant once kids entered the picture. I didn't see how I could possibly become irrelevant. I WAS the farm. At least half of it anyway. And it would be fine. We'd send the kid(s) to daycare and I'd keep farming as usual. No problem. And while we now do technically have daycare for both kids...it's never consistent. They take vacations, or holidays (cough, 4th of July) and yes we have grandparents to step in, but not always. And our baby isn't into bottles, so my body is still needed at least every 2-3 hours. And kids take a long time to get ready for their days, so when our farm day starts at 7am, our toddler is fully engaged in building a train track but also needs to eat breakfast and get out the door and oops the baby just spit up all over outfit number two of the morning.....I'm the default parent. And Jake leads the crew. The natural division of work now is Jake in the field and me in the house. I can still farm from my desk, at nap times and in quiet moments, because someone still needs to write the checks and order the parts for the broken things...and it's my body that's tethered to parenthood. At least for now.
I'm trying *so hard* to enjoy it. To appreciate the privilege of childcare and grandparent support and the ability to leave the farm work to our crew and to be able to spend real, quality time with my babies. But damn if it isn't hard to watch it all happen without me. So here are some photos of my field walk today. Where I kept myself in the loop, answered questions in person, observed and documented, then strolled back home when the whimpers coming from the stroller turned too insistent to ignore. I think, so far, we've heeded that long ago warning. I'm not ever-present, but I'm not irrelevant. I still AM this farm. It's just shared a few more ways these days."

We hilled potatoes last week before a restful weekend away! We do this because potatoes grow new sprouts above the first “seed” potato. What that means - the higher the hill, the more spuds we’ll harvest. Yay! 😋
Monday morning we were back at it harvesting for CSA and chef orders. Today, we are planting more summer crops and trying always to catch up on non-harvesting tasks. Next up, deer fence #643.

Just a couple of farm kids living their best life. Oftentimes, my husband and I walk the farm and end up with a long list of to dos. It never ends, and it can eat you up if you let it.
But, when our children walk the farm, they see stick collections, new adventures, hidden eggs, an obstacle course. No list results - Just joy, dirty feet, and mosquito bites. I wish I could see the farm through their eyes.
Thankful for some cooler days so we can all walk together.
Cooked up some sourdough granola. Original recipe thanks to . It’s been a hit! With these peanuts it also means a lot of vacuuming, but worth it. Baking/cooking with toddlers is interesting at best haha but we keep trying! I know one day, they will have all the skills they need to do it on their own.
Our baby chicks showed up the other day. We run a flock of meat birds every fall to butcher for our family. But, we are also adding to our laying hens this year.
It’s amazing how fast littles grow. It wasn’t long ago that I took a photo like this one of my girl. And yet, her reaction to our new fluffy babies was so different this time around. As they get bigger, they become more involved, more excited, but also more aware. I worry about explaining the entirety of what we do raising our own food to our children. But, I know familiarity will make my children better at this than I was early on. And teaching care and respect for our animals will always come first. We are thankful to be able to provide this food and these lessons to our children 💕
If you’re wondering where we’ve been lately, let’s just say we’ve had our hands full. Juggling it all isn’t easy. And in planning for 3 under 3, we are taking some time to figure out where we are headed. One thing is for sure! We cannot wait to add another sweet boy to our family this fall. 💕
If you’re in our Summer CSA, check your inbox! Week 5 bouquets go out tomorrow.

Mother’s Day snuck up on us this year!
About this time last year, I was 38 weeks pregnant with our son. I had planned out our farm schedule to be relatively low maintenance during May. This year, we have ramped up and are crazy busy planting, seeding, transplanting, repeat.
Mothers Day bouquets are now for sale in our online shop. We are only offering a limited amount. Orders close Monday May 2nd, so order asap. These will be available for pick up/ delivered on Friday next week. Link in bio!
