New Community
Urban focused, small group driven, community of missionaries moving to downtown Spokane April 2017 #ThisIsNewComm We have weekly Sunday service at 10am.
This church practices union: has no creed, seeks to make religion as intelligent as science, as appealing as art, as vital as the day's work, as intimate as home, as inspiring as love. Service is typically an hour and a half long. Kids Community is available during both services for children infants through 6th grade.
Join us at New Community for our Good Friday Service on March 29th @ 7pm. Doors open at 6:30 for a time of contemplation, prayer and worship as we reflect on Christ and his sacrifice for us.

With the health and safety of our church community and the broader city in mind, we’ve decided to cancel service today(Sunday, August 20th) as a precaution due to the poor air quality.
We will not be having “service as usual”. A prayer guide and prompts for you to engage in a time of prayer for those affected by the surrounding fires and the tragedy in Maui.
The Elders will open the church doors from 9-11am tomorrow to give our neighbors and those without homes on the corner of third and Howard, a space to come inside as respite from poor air quality. Our intention would be to protect the church community’s health and well-being, and love our neighbors well.
A prayer for Holy Week:
We come this morning to prepare
for the holiest of weeks.
We journey through praise, with joy on our lips;
through betrayal and death,
cradling hope in our hearts.
Jesus, leads us through this week,
and may we follow,
for you are the life we long for,
you are the Word who sustains us.
We wave palm branches in anticipation,
we lay our love before Christ.
Setting aside all power, glory, and might, he comes:
modeling humility and obedience for all of us.
Hosanna! Hosanna!
Blessed is the One who brings us
the kingdom of God.
Do you have the Lenten devotional yet? It's not too late! Pick yours up during Sunday's service or contact our staff to pick one up during the week.

Unfortunately, due to the recent below freezing temperatures, our primary furnace used to heat our gathering space stopped working early this morning. We are doing everything we can to get it back up and running this week, but today, we need to cancel our January 2 gathering.
We will keep everyone updated on next steps for our community and will update via In The Loop, Instagram, and here on Facebook when we have more information.
We know this isn't ideal and we're so grateful for your continued patience, flexibility, and understanding as we continue to recover from the building fire.
Happy New Year and we'll see you soon!
Join us tonight for our Christmas Eve service at 4:30pm! We'll have Christmas Songs, advent readings, and our annual lighting of the Christ Candle.
KidsComm will also be joining us in the sanctuary, so bring the whole family!
PS- Just a reminder that our furnace isn't functioning to its full potential, so dress warm, bring blankets, and come early for tea, coffee, and hot chocolate!

Advent is a time for us to wait in anticipation, wonder, and excitement for the coming of the Messiah and the inauguration of the “already not yet” Kingdom of God.

Update on Sunday's fire at our building:
As you may have heard by now, there was a fire yesterday shortly following our Sunday gathering at our building at 518 W 3rd Ave. Thankfully no one was harmed and the Fire Department was able respond quickly. We are currently working with the fire department, our insurance agency, and a mitigation crew to investigate and asses the extent of the damage.
What we currently know for certain is that we will not be able to hold any Sunday gatherings at the building for the foreseeable future. As we find out more information this week (and what our next steps will be as a community), we will update everyone via In The Loop, so be sure to sign up on our website if you haven’t already. We are looking into meeting spaces and plans moving forward and we appreciate your patience and grace as we figure everything out!
Additionally, please be praying for our ministry partners, Shalom, as their ability to serve warm meals was greatly affected by the need to turn off the gas to the building. We will update if/when there is a need for donations or volunteers.
We know this situation is extremely discouraging, confusing, and inexplicable, especially when it happens during a global pandemic. But as one of our Staff members said this morning, "God is in this with us."
Though we don't have any answers or solutions right now, we are trusting that God will continue to encourage and equip us to be a community of becoming and extravagant welcome as we work to see God's Kingdom come and will done on earth as it is in heaven.
We love you New Comm! We’ll update soon!
— New Comm Staff and Elders
As we continue to navigate this "new normal" of life during a global pandemic, the New Community Leadership Team is continuing to ask questions and have conversations with people as we consider the needs, wants, and desires of the people in our community. To that end, we are having a Question + Response time this Sunday and the goal of this time is to hear from you!
We will spend time on Sunday during the gathering receiving feedback, fielding questions, and getting a better sense on how we all can best live out our values of together, engage, and become.
As we prepare for Sunday's Q+R time, we’ve created a quick survey to collect feedback from our community. We’d love to hear what questions you have, comments you want to share, or feedback you want to give, as we continue to think and dream about this next chapter in the story of New Community.
To share your thoughts and answer a few questions, click here: bit.ly/newcommsurvey.
Should you find yourself in a state in which you feel overwhelmed, here is a recap from yesterday's talk:
- Acknowledge you can't do it all
- Share the load
- Say no, even to good things
- Acknowledge your reality
"The wisest way to cope is not to try to avoid being overwhelmed and certainly not to expect to be in control of everything, rather it is to live in the midst of the overwhelming in a way that lets one of them be the overwhelming that shapes the others. [Ford calls this] the home or school where the practicalities of coping can be learned."
[David Ford]
Be sure to check out the podcast to hear a recording of the talk!
It is with excitement that we inform you that New Comm is adjusting our in-building Covid restrictions! We will no longer require masks for the fully vaccinated; social distancing requirements will be amended allowing for free seating anywhere in the sanctuary; and registration for attendance is no longer required. We will continue to follow local school district protocols for kids ministry.
The staff and elders want to express incredible gratitude for the flexibility and patience of the community along with a deep appreciation for the intentionality with which the community has sought to navigate this unique season. Special thanks to those in the community who worked hard with the staff and elders to seek communal discernment concerning the every changing directives and needs of the church.
We look forward to moving into this new season and being able to more fully express worship in a gathered community!
Thank you for your prayers! The medical missions team is home after an amazing experience hosting clinics for different groups in Cairo. We look forward to hearing more about their experience on an upcoming Sunday!
Tyke time started today! A time for parents to connect and kids to get their wiggles out. Every other Thursday at 10am over the summer at local parks in Spokane! Contact Brit at [email protected] for more info!
Sending is part of our core values here at New Comm. We see our service not as the main focus of our faith but a space to gather, grow, and to be sent from. Following Christ happens every day, all day and we are called to go and be the hands and feet of Christ in the city and around the people we come in contact with every day. Which is why we spent the remainder of our service today praying and listening for the Spirit's movement in our neighborhood.
“We don't choose what we will do for God; He invites us to join Him where He wants to involve us. Right now, God is working all around you.”
- Henry T. Blackaby, Experiencing God
At first it was tongues of flame
Floating above heads as
Words sang out in languages
Unknown to the men who spoke them
Prophecies of lions and lambs
Angels on horseback and
kingdom coming down to earth
Now it's a nudge
The pull of a heartbeat or a
Friend’s name in you mouth
The phone dialed unconsciously
words and tears shared over air waves
They floated above the waters
Inspiration of humankind
protector, conscience
We come up with names too small for who you truly are
Holy spirit doesn't cut it
You are more
I will send a helper to you
Jesus said as he floated up up on that cloud
A voice, a part of myself to be with you when I have left this earth
Now we have that flame inside
Baptised in the spirit and blessed to walk
With counsel
Our steps guided by the whisper
A faint voice
Quiet
Often so faint I struggle to hear it
Struggle to know if it its you guiding my feet or selfish thoughts from
My sinner's heart
God, tell me
Reign down tongues of fire
shower me in wisdom
Let me hear the timber of your voice
Sometimes, spirit you are so quiet
Then in the desert places,
A rustle of dust off the robes of my rabbi
Against all logical thought
I hear you
I long to hear you more
Roar oh lion of Judah
Roar Emmanuel
God three in one
Let me hear you
Let me speak your prophecies in my home
To my daughters
To my mother
And God,
Please remind me of your goodness,
Because sometimes I have my doubts
Spirit be louder than the doubt
Roar spirit who hovered over the darkness
Who was there before there was here
And before the earth lay on water
And before we spun on this planet surrounded by beings made
From God's breath and stardust
Roar like a lion
Good but not safe
Gentle but not passive
Holy
Holy and quiet
This poem was the perfect start to our 6-week exploration of Holy Spirit. Written by Lydia Mulligan.
You were made by the creator of the universe with the ability to create.
Whether you create life, build houses, write music or poetry, short stories, grow plants, or even use your creativity to organize spreadsheets and manage people, you have the ability to be creative.
In this upcoming 8-week small group starting April 22nd, participants will have an opportunity to learn from different guest speakers who are passionate about sharing their art, craft, or form of worship in topics ranging from poetry, hand lettering, gardening, visual art, memoir, textiles, and several others. We aim to learn, share, and grow community with each other. Interested? Visit the link below to sign up!

Today, we honor the life, legacy, family, and activism of one of the greatest leaders our world has ever known, Reverend and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Every year, New Community participates in the MLK March here in Spokane. These photos are just a few of many memories from past marches together. Due to the ongoing pandemic, the City of Spokane is holding their MLK Event online this year. As a community, we will be participating in this online event and would encourage you to do the same. Additionally, we’ve put together a short “MLK March” that you can take on your own, around your neighborhood, as you create space to honor the life and legacy of Dr. King and continue all that he worked and advocated for.
