The King of Expo '74: Urban planner's arrival marked decade march toward Spokane's world's fair 07/01/2024

I was lucky enough to go to Expo 74 as a midwest boy and later meet King Cole when I volunteered on the Expo+10 celebration. At the press conference opening Expo+10 at Riverfront Park, King was in a jubilant mood amidst heavy rainfall and a handful of press folks required to be there. His positive spirit and uplifting remarks that day informed me about leadership.

Bravo to King Cole and his legacy.

The King of Expo '74: Urban planner's arrival marked decade march toward Spokane's world's fair King Cole arrived with his family of 10 in Spokane in November 1963. He's been praised as the source of energy that made a world's fair possible in a revitalized downtown that was losing attention because of industrial blight and suburban development.

New section of Children of the Sun Trail set to open Saturday! 12/22/2023

A new section of the Children of the Sun Trail from Columbia Avenue to Cleveland Avenue will open Saturday. Once this section is open, the Children of the Sun Trail will connect nearly seven miles from northern Wandermere through Hillyard almost to the Spokane River.

The trail will also run parallel to the North Spokane Corridor and connect into the Centennial Trail which will give residents more options to bike, walk or run!

While the trail is opening to the public on Saturday, there are still more features being added. Workers will add benches, kiosks, permanent signing, bridge lighting and plazas.

Work is set to officially be complete in spring or summer 2024, which is when WSDOT will hold a community-driven celebration and ribbon-cutting for the trail.

AVISTA CONSTRUCTION ON THE BLUFF CLOSES TRAILS:
Construction to rebuild a two-mile stretch of the Metro to Sunset transmission line is nearing completion. One of the last steps involves installing and pulling the new transmission wire connecting all the poles.

It is very important that trail users stay away from the trails during the full trail closure due to the dangerous nature of having four phases of wire strung in the air. While stringing, the belly of the wire can sag and come close to the ground which is a safety hazard. Avista wants to keep everyone safe.

The Trails will be Fully Closed as follows:

Wed, Sept 27 – Sat, Sept 30 from 7:00am – 5:30pm
Mon, Oct 2 from 7:00am – 5:30pm
The trails will be open as follows:

In the evenings after 5:30pm (the wire will be safely secured overnight)
Sun, Oct 1 – All Day
The attached map shows where the trail closures will occur. The green highlighted line is the path of the transmission wires. Please note that the closures cover most of the trails and access to/from the trails.

NOTE: Please forward this information to share as widely as possible.

FREE NATURE DAY at Lincoln Park: you can arrive any time between 8 am to 1 pm for a guided walk!

Spokane Urban Nature is sponsoring a half day of nature education and park appreciation at Lincoln Park on Saturday, May 13 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Because of limited parking we ask that people park on the north side of the park, 2300 E 17th Ave, Spokane, WA.

This is a neighborhood event to help those who live near and those who walk the park to learn more about the plants, birds, and nearby habitat. There will be nature walks led by birdwatchers, plant experts, and friends of Lincoln Park. There will be a park clean up where volunteers can help with trash collection (gloves and bags provided).

The greeters for the event will be in lower Lincoln Park at an information table. Come and meet up with your neighbors and fellow nature lovers for a walk around the park. Group walks will be organized with groups of 10 or less. First come, first walking. Walks will be on the hour and half hour. No reservations required.

Spokane Urban Nature is an ad hoc community group advocating for natural lands within the urban core. For more information: Spokane Urban Nature is on Facebook or you can email [email protected]

NSC Place - Collection Creating Place in and around the US 395 North Spokane Corridor and the Children of the Sun Trail.

04/27/2023

The WA State Dept. of Transportation recently described how Children of the Sun Trail will intersect the Spokane River & Centennial Trail as part of the North Spokane Corridor project (see rendering). This project scope includes everything from Carlisle Street on the north to Mission Avenue on the south. Greene Street Trailhead will not change. A crosswalk to the trailhead will be added on Upriver Drive. Two ways to depart Children of the Sun Trail on the north bank will include stairs with a gutter for bike wheels and a pathway to Ralph Street.
On the south side of the river at Spokane Community College, a trailhead with informational kiosk and benches will be built. Children of the Sun Trail will meet the Millwood Trail to the east, Tuffy’s Trail to the west, and continue south through the neighborhoods until it reaches I-90. It will not parallel the elevated highway.

The contract has been awarded for design build of the Children of the Sun Bridge. Once designed, construction will commence and last for three years. WSDOT estimates the highway span will be completed before the trail bridge.

Rembering Clyde Anderson: Today we mourn the passing of Clyde Anderson, a legacy leader who helped locate the Spokane River Centennial Trail along the Spokane River to allow countless visitors the ability to recreate, commute, and commune with nature in the heart of our region. Clyde passed away late last week at age 96. We will miss his enthusiasm, kind words, unwavering support, and visits that always ended with, “Keep up the good work and know I love you!”

Throughout the 30+ year history of the Centennial Trail, Clyde Anderson was in step with its creation and coordination. Many generous deals were cut in the 1980’s to make the Centennial Trail a reality. Clyde’s volunteer work as state parks commissioner and role as general manager and president of Inland Empire Paper was central to building the trail along the Spokane River from the Washington/Idaho state line to Donkey Islands Trailhead. As a Friends of the Centennial Trail Board member, he was instrumental in widening Upriver Drive near Boulder Beach to Islands Trailhead and constructing Sandifur Bridge over the Spokane River between Kendall Yards and People’s Park.

In a letter Clyde wrote in 1992 to Robbi Castleberry, Chair of the Friends, he said, “My years of involvement on this great project have been rewarding and a special pleasure to me personally. I trust my involvement has helped this Trail to become a reality.”

Mile 23-24 from Riverfront Park to Kendall Yards was dedicated in Clyde’s honor in 2015 as Washington State Parks and Recreation “Commissioner for Life.” Smile and think of Clyde as you walk, run, or bike on his Centennial Trail mile, and perhaps consider the legacy you, too, can leave
