Students recently completed their Mt. Adams climb for the Leadership & Hardiness course and one of our alumni mentors, Amanda Little, created this video sharing a glimpse into the climb. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qe8HA0gPEY4
Reflecting on the 2024 climb, Dr. Adrian Popa shared this:
"Humanity is alive & well! Our Zags just returned from a backcountry experience where they applied hardiness principles and strategic resilience to work as teams in climbing Mt. Adams. Like frontcountry organizations, backcountry teams require self-sufficiency with utter dependence on others for goal achievement, human performance & a meaningful experience of mission and goals set by the team. Our students experienced Viktor Frankl’s existential paradox of “what I want versus what is being asked of me” in goal setting, process, decision-making, shared leadership, & teamwork - all within a highly uncertain, complex, and ambiguous backcountry context where adaptive leadership rules over rigid thinking.
Our leadership students learned to operationalize & execute resilience in their teams by (1) engaging in purposeful work aligned with a purpose greater than themselves, (2) loving & caring for others which often manifested itself in the service of others, and (3) finding courage in the face of adversity & challenge. In examining the “intensification of the inner life” our students discovered that the transcendental power of love for others transcends far beyond individual pursuits of physical and metaphorical summits. Our backcountry “trail slogan” was to simply BE – LOVE – DO!
Sincere gratitude to Gonzaga University School of Leadership Studies alumni mentors who return yearly to volunteer in service to others and make this course a reality for leadership students. Your presence, love, and service to others is an animation of the transformational power of Jesuit education at Gonzaga University."

"What we do here matters." Discover what fuels Dr. Hoover's passion for leadership studies.
Today is Juneteenth, a celebration of Black history, culture, arts, activism and empowerment. Today we acknowledge June 19, 1865 as the day when news of the Emancipation Proclamation finally reached Galveston, Texas, two years after President Lincoln issued the order which declared that "all persons held as slaves" were free.
This holiday reminds us that emancipation was just a start and the journey continues to this day. Juneteenth provides a moment for reflection and commitment to learning about the achievements of Black Americans. In solidarity, we pursue a world where everyone can thrive and flourish.
Snapshots from Florence for the Renaissance Rhetoric & Contemporary Leadership Class.
While gaining an understanding of the humanistic movement of the Italian Renaissance and the role it continues to play in contemporary society, students had the opportunity to take a cooking class, visit to the Corsini Winery (in the Tuscan hills) and hike up to Piazzale Michelangelo during their time in Italy. 🇮🇹

ORGL 605 students are on campus for their immersion. They're learning creative ways to lead. They also had a little visit from a new friend (see the deer) and great weather. Welcome everyone we are so happy you are here.
As we gather with loved ones today, we are called to remember the selfless acts of our departed heroes. We honor their legacy with heartfelt thanks and reverent remembrance. 🇺🇸
We want to celebrate one of our incredible students, Nicole Gunning.
Nicole is a Master’s in Organizational Leadership student who has maintained a 4.0 while working for STCU and raising her two daughters with her husband Dustin Butler.
Nicole is nearly finished with her degree but needed a break recently due to a personal battle. We wanted to honor Nicole’s commitment to life-long learning and recently Dean Jeff Borden presented Nicole’s husband with an honorary diploma in front of College Hall.
We at Gonzaga strongly believe in the spirit of Cura Personalis and a greater transcendent purpose. Anyone who has had the opportunity to learn with Nicole knows about her love for learning and advocacy for education in our communities. If you have any words of encouragement for Nicole and her family, please comment below and we will make sure she sees them.
Congratulations to Dr. Dũng Q. Trần for being promoted to associate professor and granted tenure!
