Spokane County Emergency Management
~Promoting Community Resilience through Collaboration~
Heads up folks, we have issued a Fire Weather Watch for Sunday. Conditions are favorable for rapid fire spread. Stay alert, avoid outdoor burning, and report any fires immediately. Safety first! ๐ฒ๐ฅ
You may ask: Is there a burn ban?
Check out these sites.
Washington: https://ecology.wa.gov/air-climate/air-quality/smoke-fire/burn-bans or https://www.dnr.wa.gov/burn-restrictions
Idaho: https://www.idl.idaho.gov/fire-management/fire-restrictions-finder/
From Avista Utilities: Avista is taking action to respond to the hot, dry weather conditions by changing our operations to decrease the potential for wildfire across our Washington and Idaho service area.
This shift, called fire safety mode, means we change our system to turn off automatic re-energization when a fault occurs. Avistaโs line personnel will physically inspect an outage area before a line is placed back into service. It means you may experience longer outage times, but it keeps everyone safer.
New this year, Avista will be implementing, if warranted, a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS). A PSPS event is used only in extreme weather conditions. Avista will use this method to reduce the threat of a wildfire in our communities.
Join us for a Live Conversation about Wildfire on Thursday, June 20th at 6 p.m.
Youโll hear from Avistaโs system operations and managers about the changes weโre making to reduce wildfire risk in your community. Weโll be joined by experts from the Cheney Fire Department and Spokane County Emergency Management to discuss emergency preparedness.
You will also have the opportunity to ask questions and engage in polling, providing valuable feedback throughout the event.

Let's talk about Defensible space.
Defensible space is crucial for your homeโs wildfire safety. Itโs the buffer zone you create between your property and the surrounding wildland area. This space is key to slowing or stopping wildfire spread and protecting your home from embers, flames, or heat. It also gives firefighters a safer area to defend your property.

Looks like we have our first round of heavy snow coming in tonight and tomorrow. If you have to be out driving please make sure you slow down and leave extra time to get where you are going and keep extra space between your car and the car in front of you.
We are going to have a very, very cold few days. Try to limit your time outside. Keep pets inside as much as possible as these temps are extremely dangerous.
Though we are still expecting snow across portions of the Inland Northwest today, perhaps the even more drastic change will be plummeting temperatures for tonight into the weekend. Here is the wind chill forecast for Friday morning around the typical work/school commute time. Yep, that's pretty brisk!
