Do you have to talk yourself into exercise?

I used to be that way, too. I was a bit in denial that exercise made me feel better.

No, really.

Somehow I convinced myself that I was lazy. I'm not sure where or when it started, but I actually referred to myself as lazy, and I felt like exercise was a chore.

I had created a story for myself that wasn't true.

I'm not lazy. Nor is exercise a chore for me.

I needed to find an exercise that I actually enjoyed. I needed a reason to get up and get moving.

When I tried Pilates, I felt like I had found something new and exciting. It was challenging, different every session, and FUN.

I no longer have to talk myself into exercising. Pilates, and now Yoga, is reason enough to get my butt on my mat and move.

Maybe you wouldn't have to talk yourself into moving, either. Are you ready to try something fun?

Remember a few months ago, when I told you about the pinched nerve in my butt? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I’ve spent most of the time since injuring my poor t**h worrying that I’d make it worse or that I had done permanent damage.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
While the worry kept me doing my homework, it was draining. Luckily, when I saw my chiropractor last week, she gave me the go-ahead to get back to it! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Yes, I was elated last Thursday. But Monday night, I felt some pain creep back in. Tuesday, I spent the day doing the things I knew would bring relief.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You know what?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It worked. I slept through the night, pain-free. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Yesterday, I got the relief I needed. Not just pain relief. I let go of the worry.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I had pain, but I made it go away. When I realized my work (and Angela Scopel's work;)) paid off, and that I didn't need to worry anymore, I relaxed for the first time in months. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I no longer need to waste my energy on the “what if” something happens because I know that I have the tools to fix it. I'm too relaxed to care.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

A year ago, I started teaching virtually out of what was once our shared office, then a playroom for the kids, and now my studio/office.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I adapted, as we all did, and I'm still surprised by how much I've loved it. I've got a newfound appreciation for mat exercises, and I've been able to grow my "studio" while reducing costs. I've found more creativity in my sessions and classes, and it's given me so many new ideas. I've launched a website and started online programs with people I love working with.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Yes, the pandemic has had a negative impact on most of us in one way, shape, or form, but in this one area for me...it's been transformational. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I try to focus on that when the negatives come creeping in, and it's getting me through the 💩.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Do you feel a little "stuck" right now?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

So many of us are itching to get back to "normal." We're in some weird holding pattern where the last year of quarantine could be over soon, but it's not moving quickly enough. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The problem with the holding pattern is that you can get truly stuck there and never move past it. You get caught up in the waiting and lose yourself in the process. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You need to keep moving and keep doing the things that bring you joy and calm. You need to try the new exercise or keep doing the ones that make you feel good. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You need to keep going, so that when the hold is lifted, you're in a healthy place and ready to move forward.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

You need to take care of yourself now - why are you putting yourself on hold?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I pinched a nerve in my left gluteal area, so that means no intense stretches for my hamstring and glute.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So Roll Downs and Forward Folds are off the table for the time being, cuz I'm a good patient, for the most part.😉 (my chiro, is the best!)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It's amazing to me that I would even get to a place where I miss this - for most of my life I couldn't bend over and touch my toes! Pilates and Yoga have changed me in more ways than one.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
For those out there struggling to embrace these movements, know that one day, you might miss them. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Rocking makes me giggle because I feel so awkward doing it. Lifting yourself into such a great stretch and feel-good (at least for me) exercise is fun, but then trying to Rock back and forth always makes me laugh. It's makes me feel silly, and I can't stop laughing every time.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Do you feel pain in Cobra or Up Dog?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

The first time I took a Yoga class, I nearly lost my mind. The class started just fine, but within the first 10 minutes, I heard the instructor cue, "Cobra or Up Dog," and I almost said something not nice. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In my Pilates training, we save Back Extension for the end of the session when everything's nice and warm. I could have pointed that out to my lovely instructor (who is fabulous and knows her stuff, by the way), but I was raised better than that!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I continued, choosing Cobra until I felt I was warm and could move into more extension safely. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Years later, I still modify in my Yoga practice until I feel warm enough to move safely. My Pilates prep in various types of Back Extension has kept me from going too far, too fast in my Yoga practice.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I've never participated. Until COVID, I rarely taught Mat classes because I didn't really enjoy them. I never really felt good at it. I know I'm not supposed to care, but dammit, I don't like it when I'm not good at stuff!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

After almost 1 year (1 year this month!) spent virtually teaching, I feel a new connection to the Mat. I appreciate it's versatility, and I actually feel like I've made great progress in my own practice, just by teaching clients and moving with them. What a fantastic WIN to celebrate!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
