Chamber of Mothers

Chamber of Mothers unites mothers as advocates to create a better America. We work in concert with existing lobby and advocacy groups.

The Chamber of Mothers is a coalition of motherhood community leaders and individuals united in advocating for mothers' rights, modeled after the Chamber of Commerce, the largest lobbying block in the United States.

104 years ago, The 19th Amendment was adopted and officially became part of the U.S. Constitution.

Did you know, that the final vote came down to 24-year-old, Harry T. Burns, the youngest member of the Tennessee General Assembly?

During the initial vote, he wore an anti-suffragist pin and voted against the amendment in what would be a tie vote.

A letter from his MOTHER, Febb Burn, had been delivered to him in the chamber before revoting.

It read: “Dear Son, … Hurray and vote for Suffrage and don’t keep them in doubt. I noticed Chandlers’ speech, it was very bitter. I’ve been waiting to see how you stood but have not seen anything yet…. Don’t forget to be a god boy and help Mrs. Catt with her “Rats.” Is she the one that put rat in ratification, Ha! No more from mama this time. With lots of love, Mama.”

When revoting, Burns voted “Aye," which made Tennessee the 36th state needed for the 19th Amendment to be adopted as a Constitutional Amendment.

But before Burns's vote determined the fate of the 19th Amendment, the success of ratification was a huge movement of people working together who lectured, wrote, marched, lobbied, and practiced civil disobedience for a century to achieve it.

Even after that, it took 60+ years for ALL women to gain the right to vote legally.

Our next book club event is right around the corner 📖 on 8/14 with author of Touched Out, Amanda Montei.

😍 RSVP - https://lnkd.in/gJGqj4Sw

When Amanda became a parent, she struggled with the physicality of caring for children, but even more with the growing lack of autonomy she felt in her personal and professional life. The conditions of modern American parenthood—the lack of paid leave and affordable childcare, the isolation and alienation, the distribution of labor in her home, and the implicit demands of marriage—were not what she had expected.

Touched Out, Explores the stories we tell about psychology, childbirth, sexuality, the family, the overwhelm mothers feel trying to be “good,” and the tender bonds that form between parent and child. It delivers a powerful critique of American SA culture and its continuation in the institution of motherhood, and considers what it really means to care in America.

Family issues need to be at the forefront of this election, and we want to give moms back their power to Vote like a Mother. Thank you, Yasmi Vossoughian and NBC News Now, for sharing our story.

The vote to expand the Child Tax Credit (CTC) was blocked last week.

However, you did a great job letting your Senators know you supported the expansion of the CTC. Thank you for showing up for families across America. This is the action we need.

Katie Britt and Time Kaine introduced new legislation: The Child Care Availability Act and the Child Care Workforce Act.

Swipe to find out how this legislation will help families.

📢 Two actions you can take:

1. Take Count on Mothers's poll to let your voice be heard about this Bipartisan Childcare Package - https://www.research.net/r/countonmothersaugust24.

2. Email or call your Members of Congress and urge them to pass this Childcare package.

Vote Like a Mother supports mothers by providing information and the tools needed to vote accordingly to their interests as mothers.

Kamala Harris has centered herself around maternal rights in America. She was the lead Senator in introducing The Maternal Health Momnibus Act which is one of our priorities legislations we are working hard to get passed. We are in DC right now meeting across the aisle with Senators urging them to pass the Momnibus package.

In the next 24 hours we're raising $10,000 to⚡️Help ⚡️You ⚡️Help ⚡️Us!

We've heard you loud and clear. You WANT to do this work. You want to make lasting changes at home, at work, and in your community.

And we need YOU in this fight with us. 🫶

Together, we will create the country that we want to bestow upon the next generation.

This Giving Tuesday, we're raising $10,000 to create quarterly advocacy toolkits for you — our community.

These will be downloadables - released once every three months. They will outline the work that needs to be done and exactly how and when to do it. In these toolkits we'll share volunteer and advocacy opportunities all over the U.S. Explain any current policies/news impacting mothers as well as ways to have your voice heard. Highlight the work of other nonprofits doing important work that needs to be amplified. Share communication strategies for tough conversations and tips for creating social change. Outline exactly how to mobilize in your community over the issues that matter most to mothers. Keep you up-to-date on all local chapter meetings, events, and advocacy efforts.

Together, we will continue doing this work — in every community all over the country.

Whether you can give a recurring monthly gift or a one-time flat donation, all is appreciated. All is NEEDED.

Use the linkin.bio to submit your donation and then raise your hands in the comments to share your support!

If you don't have capacity to give, perhaps you could share this post so it reaches others! We are all in this fight together. And we aren't stopping until mothers are better supported and care work is valued in this country.

What do momfluencer culture, mom guilt, and the idea of so-called “generous” corporate paid leave programs all have in common?

THEY ARE SCAMS.

LOOK AT ALL THE GOOD YOU DID! 🙌

The results of yesterday’s midterms were decidedly…ah, not as rough as they could have been? (Special thanks specifically to Gen Z and Black women whom exit polls are showing are the ones who saved us from election-deniers and TV personalities who think guacamole is crudité.)

While the final tallies are still trickling in on the Congressional races, let’s take a sec to celebrate the wins that came in the form of those little trickily-worded paragraphs known as *ballot measures*.

For a while now, we’ve known that Americans overwhelmingly approve of family-supporting legislation like paid leave, affordable childcare, and abortion rights even if the folks in office haven’t managed to get it together to legally protect those cultural norms yet (RIP BBB and Roe).

Well, power to the Moms, because, in the meantime, we’ve got quite a few ballot measure wins to celebrate state by state. We've highlighted many of those victories, above, around kids’ education, childcare/family health, anti poverty, and abortion access.

And now we keep on fighting.

Not enough fingers to count how times we have seen this very complaint (disguised as a question). Every single time child care/paid leave/etc comes up!

We clearly have a problem with individualism. The idea of society and community care seems to be non-existent. Instead, we have people shouting "don't tread on MY freedoms" from the back of pickup trucks as they tread on others' freedoms.

Something's gotta give. We need better representation that doesn't embolden the ugliest parts of our country.

We are excited to be hosting two more amazing activists right here on our Instagram over the next week.

This Thursday, Oct. 27th we will be chatting with , founder of and . In 2018, Liuba ran a historic congressional campaign to represent New York’s 2nd District in the U.S. House of Representatives. She received the highest vote share of any Democrat to run against the incumbent in 25 years. She petitioned the Federal Election Commission and became the first woman in history to receive federal approval to spend Campaign Funds on Childcare.

She will be taking YOUR questions about what actions you can take right now as an individual pi**ed off mom in order to affect righteous change!

And next Thursday, Nov. 3rd we will be joined by Amanda Brown Lierman, executive director of . Amanda was the Democratic National Committee’s political and organizing director during the 2018 midterms and is a former national political director for Rock the Vote. For those that aren't familiar with Supermajority's amazing work, they are a women’s equality organization that centers the lived experiences and liberation of all women and all people who have been marginalized due to their gender, including trans women, cisgender women, gender nonbinary people, and trans men.

Here in these parts we don't claim to be the best at any one thing. Our area of expertise is in bringing together the best people in order to affect change.

And boy are we delivering with this one. As we countdown to the we will have a guest expert join us every week on IG live for an AMA session. Let's demystify politics and show them the matters.

Look out for and of .lobby over the next two weeks.

So why do midterms matter?

They don't have the whammy of a presidential election, but they are just as important. This is the time to vote on the issues that matter most. This is the time to elect the representatives who support the issues that matter to you!

This midterm election could be the most consequential we've had in years. EVERY seat in the house of representatives is there for the taking. There are also 35 U.S. Senate seats and 36 governorships up for grabs. That's a lot!

We get having voter apathy. We get being overwhelmed by it all. And that's why we want to be here to hold your hand every step of the way. And we’ll do this by bringing on guest experts to answer your questions, offering resources, discussing the issues... essentially taking the mystery (intentionally designed that way!) out of politics. The matters.

Vote Like a Mother began with a sign. A cardboard sign drawn for a protest march. A sign from the universe: You can and must do more.

Chamber of Mothers began as a group text between fed up moms. Paid Family Leave was left on the Senate's cutting room floor? It was time for the mothers to get loud. We can and must do more.

Both of our organizations believe in the power of mothers at the voting booth. We use our parenthood as a lens for politics.

And now, just in time to prepare for these vital midterm elections, we are teaming up. We are so proud to announce that is now an initiative of the . Thank you, VLAM founder Sara Berliner, for your fierce belief in the and for entrusting Chamber of Mothers with your baby.

Let's be honest. Politics are intentionally made confusing to intimidate people. We are ALL feeling overwhelmed right now. Even those of us who seem to have all the answers.

Asking questions is important. Listening is important. Educating yourself on the issues is important.

In 2019, the published an article titled: "Why the U.S. Has Long Resisted Universal Child Care."

The article is fascinating and, of course, something we at Chamber of Mothers are all deeply invested in. But what we found really insightful was to look through the comments. Much of what's being said are the same things we are hearing today, more than three years later.

Why do we still not have child care? Knowing the exorbitant cost of raising a child, how are we supporting parents to afford to raise families? Who is responsible to offer this support?

We highly advise you to give the article a read-through, the link is in our bio. Then come back here and share your thoughts!

Leading health organizations have long recognized that maternal mortality is a preventable public health crisis. This much we have known.

However, new statistics from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveal that mostly all maternal mortality deaths are preventable.

This is heartbreaking and also leaves room for change. There is much work to be done.
