This morning, Deputy Miller (pictured right) was recognized for his service by Point Blank Enterprises, the company that made the armor plate that saved his life on June 17th of this year. Deputy Miller was presented Point Blank’s SAVES Recognition Award for his courage and bravery.

We are deeply thankful that Deputy Miller was wearing this vital piece of equipment and it functioned as intended, keeping him safe.

The Helen M. Delano Fund supports the families of Springfield firefighters or police officers injured or killed in the line of duty. The Helen M. Delano Fund gifted two first responders with a grant fund check for $2,000. Applications must be made on behalf of an individual through the City of Springfield or the local police or firefighter union. The SPOA Foundation and Cheif Paul Williams selected Officer Schertz to be presented with the gift.

We want to recognize and thank the Helen M. Delano Fund organization for choosing and presenting Officer Schertz with a check.

Officer Schertz responded to a check-wellbeing for a suicidal male. The male was trying to harm himself so officers tried to stop him from harming himself further. During the incident, Officer Schertz broke his ankle during the struggle. Schertz continued to control the male’s arms to prevent the male from further harming himself until other officers arrived on scene. SPD officers assisted the male to receive mental health services and resources he needed.

Officer Schertz has been on light duty since the injury working various assignments and is expected to return to full duty soon. We cannot express how thankful we are that all individuals involved are safe.

I’ve always been especially moved by this old picture.

The word “warrior” has become somewhat taboo in the past few years as it pertains to law enforcement. Some who sit behind a desk all day would like to think that policing is all about kissing babies and holding hands, and bending to the will of others in the name of political correctness. We’ve seen it all over the country over the past decade. And while some of those things have their places at times, the essence of law enforcement has always been, and remains, the ability to stare evil in the eye and prevail. To be down, but not out. And to win no matter what.

Brothers and sisters and blue, be warriors.

4 years ago, many of us woke up
to the worst news we could imagine. Others of us had just spent the night in a daze, trying to process the horrors we witnessed and the chaos that ensued. All of us have spent the last 4 years grieving the loss of our brother, sharing in the sorrow of the families of the civilians who lost their lives, and marveling at the bravery of all of the officers that answered the call that night and stared evil in the eye without backing down.

We salute you, Officer Walsh. Your sacrifice and example of courage will never be forgotten.

Your Leo family will forever miss you.

Our hearts are always heavy when a brother in blue falls in the line of duty. Today, it hits a little harder. Many of us were born and raised in the Kansas City Metro. We have family there. We have friends and loved ones who wear the badge in Independence and the KC area. For some of us, it is home.

Our hearts are absolutely broken today for the Independence Police Department. We hold a special place in our hearts for IPD, ever since Ofc. Blaize Madrid-Evans sacrificed his life, and in the process gave life to our own injured Officer Mark Priebe.

May God grant peace and comfort to our brothers and sisters with the IPD. We grieve alongside you tonight. Stand strong, knowing we stand with you. Hold the line.

💙

These old pictures are fun.

I have a feeling that drunk driver in ‘63 remembered his interaction with this unknown officer the next time he thought about driving drunk again.

In the employee files recently given to the museum was this photo from 1963 of an officer documenting the damage to his uniform so he could get reimbursed for the repairs.
He fought a drunk driver while arresting him. He got rather muddy and his uniform was torn. I colorized the photo to better show the damage.

A few hours from now will mark the 9 year anniversary of when our brother Aaron Pearson was shot in the line of duty.

Nearly a decade after Aaron’s display of bravery, perseverance, and incredible example of willpower and toughness, we honor him. His strength, dedication, and refusal to give up are a daily inspiration to all of us who were there that night, and to those who have come after and heard the story.

Aaron is a bright shining example that nothing will stop Springfield Police Officers from executing our mission: to protect and serve our city from those who would bring evil upon it. This is the mission that Aaron carried out every day, and the mission that we strive toward, our resolve strengthened with the knowledge that warriors like Aaron Pearson have carried the torch honorably and fearlessly before us.

To this day, he continues to inspire us to keep our eyes on the prize and to carry on the mission for which he sacrificed so much. I know he’s probably tired of hearing it, but he is our hero, and will forever be a motivating voice that keeps us going through the most harrowing of times.

We will never forget the outpouring of community support that came in the days and weeks after Aaron was shot. We thank you, citizens of Springfield, for holding Aaron’s family and our family in blue close in our time of struggle. Know that your Springfield Police Officers have not forgotten that support, nor will we, and that we remain dedicated to you as a community in our mission to keep you safe and secure from the wickedness that seeks to destroy our city.

Please say a prayer of thanks today for warriors like Aaron Pearson, badge 1641.

⚠ BE AWARE ⚠

We have several reports today from individuals who have received scam phone calls where the caller is identifying themselves as a representative of the Springfield Police Department. The scammer claims to be raising funds for the Springfield Police Department.

The Springfield Police Department will not call you and ask for money.

The Springfield Police Foundation and the Springfield Police Officers Association Foundation do fundraisers that benefit their respective foundations, but neither nonprofit organization will demand money over the phone and both are independent from the Springfield Police Department.

SPD honored two of the greats today.

Det. Walker serves in our Child Victims Unit and does a phenomenal job in his work to lock away the most despicable of all criminals in our community, and Det. Broberg serves in our Vehicle Theft Unit, where he excels at tracking down thieves and continues his career as being one of the most effective bad guy chasers SPD has ever seen, both on patrol and in CID.

Congratulations, detectives!
