There just are not enough words to express our deep gratitude to University Plaza Hotel & Convention Center with Atrium Hospitality. Thank you for care and compassion for our neighbors in need. Thank you for opening up your space. Thank you for the constant supply of hot coffee and cold water. Thank you for the respect that your staff showed to our cold guests, they were rockstars!Thank you for being community minded and saving lives this past week.

We were beyond grateful for the opportunity to open the Springfield Expo Center on the coldest days when lives were at risk. Over those three days we saw more than 200 guests; the youngest was 17 and the oldest was 91. We saw housed guests who lost power or had no heat. We saw unsheltered guests desperate for a safe place.

We met:

A disabled man with an apartment that lost heat came to the Expo Center on Friday. We were able to asses his situation- the heat had gone out but the power was still on. TCG bought space heaters and took him home, taught him how to safely use them and weatherproofed his windows to keep his apartment warmer.

A disabled 56 year old woman who had been sleeping in her broken down car with no heat and no phone battery was found by SPD and brought to the Expo Center. Volunteers worked hard to rewarm her, check her feet, and create a comfortable way for her to lay down and rest on a bench. One volunteer reached out to friends to get donations for a new coat, gloves, hat, and shoes for her.

A man who had become homeless on the night of the 23rd and used Shelter SGF to request a ride to an open shelter bed. Outreach took him to the Venues and then he came to the Expo Center the morning of the 24th terrified. We were able to get him a backpack, supplies, a coat, and lots of instructions about how to use the shelter system.

* A young girl (22) came into the Expo Center with no shoes… socks only in the snow. She was shivering and cold and we were able to get her warmed up as well as new shoes and socks.

* A 21 year old on the streets used a staff members phone to call home on Christmas Eve morning and said he wanted to come home. Within a couple of hours I had a volunteer that was driving that way for Christmas identified who drove the young man home to meet his mom and dad.

These are only a few of the many, many stories we heard and became a part of.

It really was a beautiful three days of community and love. Most importantly, ALL THREE NIGHTS, PEOPLE WHO ASKED FOR SHELTER WERE ABLE TO GET IT!

Thank you to churches and faith communities who said yes. Thank you to volunteers who showed up and loved out loud. Thank you to people and organizations that provided food and snacks. Thank you to partners who helped with supplies. Thank you to city leaders who helped make this space available.

This is what community can and should look like all year long. There is so much more cold weather to come and we need all the help we can get. Please get involved in making Springfield a safer and more compassionate place for everyone who calls it home. ❤️
