Regrettably we are informing everyone that the NRC Springfield Navy Ball 2023 has been cancelled. Unfortunately, we did not meet the minimum requirements to reserve the venue due to lack of participation and funding. There was a minimum count of people that needed to attend and a minimum reservation fee that needed to be met to push forward, but we did not meet either of those minimums.

However, we are still looking to have a Navy Birthday event for that same drill weekend. More to follow from the TRIAD on the details of that event.

In the future, we will look to market and fund raise for the upcoming Navy Ball events all year-round so that we can maximize our participation and maximize our funding in order to have the best Navy Ball that Springfield has seen in a long time!

So keep your spirits up and let’s press on to the next morale booster and even more to come!

Celebrating AAPI Heritage Month

As we continue to join the nation in celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we take a look back at Officers Cook 3rd Class Forsia, who was the first native Samoan to be decorated in World War II.

He received the Purple Heart after being wounded when a Japanese submarine shelled Samoa on January 11, 1942. In the photo, Forsia is wearing the uniform of the Samoan Naval Fita-Fita Guard while at Naval Station, Samoa in 1943.

The Fita-fita uniform is a distinctive piece of U.S. Navy and Samoan history. Unlike those who served in the 1st Samoan Marine Battalion during the Second World War, the Fita-fita uniform had features of both Samoan culture and common U.S. Navy enlisted personnel. Most Fita-fita wore a uniform that consisted of a red cap, white skivvy shirt, red sash, and white lava lava (a type of long dress kilt) with blue chevrons. The Fita-fita occasionally wore an alternate blue lava lava dress uniform with red chevrons (depicted). The stripes sewn on the bottom of the lava lava kilt denoted rank.

Today, American Samoan Sailors carry out the tradition of service, proudly serving in the defense of the United States and risking their lives in the U.S. Navy.
