I recently had the honor to participate in a project sponsored by General Motors called “Brushes for Cancer.” Participant artists were paired up with a cancer survivor as inspiration to create a work of art that would serve to symbolize their journey from diagnosis through treatment. I was paired with a wonderful woman who openly shared her story with me, and God Bless is cancer free today! Although she is not originally from Michigan...she now calls it home and has developed a love for one of my true “Happy Places”, Mackinac Island. I would also like to acknowledge Jimmy Taylor who provided the reference photo for my painting. Linda, thank you for sharing your story, Stay Strong...This is for you!

About the Artist -
John “J.C.” Demers is a contemporary watercolor artist who lives and works in St. Clair Shores, Michigan. A Michigan native and an avid sailor, his watercolor paintings pay homage to the natural beauty of the Great Lakes State, and the limitless recreational opportunities within. Demers’ realistic depictions of the transformative effects of light and color in the earth, sky, clouds, water, architecture and foliage are life-affirming. His distinct personal style emanates tranquility and peace, yet expresses a vibrant realistic spirit and atmosphere that is Pure Michigan.
Picturesque landscapes, seascapes, lighthouses and historical sites are all brought to life with exquisite detail, contrasting and harmonious colors, and unique compositions. His passion for sailing, both competitive racing and cruising has developed a very strong affection for Mackinac Island, and continuously serves as inspiration for his work. As the artist explains,
“I am an explorer, an adventurer, a story teller… and I welcome you to join me on this visual journey.”
Growing up on the shores of Lake St. Clair, Demers has a reverence for nature and love of the outdoors. He possesses a deep-rooted interest and passion for the lakes and waterways, as well as their storied history. In a way, his art is reflective of the past, with a thoughtful touch of the present.
From a young age he has believed, “You can create anything once you see it in your mind.”
Demers studied Architecture and Fine Art at the University of Michigan — with honors. In the years since, his efforts are in numerous private collections, and have included commissioned portraits of several Detroit and world-renowned Sports Icons…Steve Yzerman, Sergei Fedorov, Bob Probert, Wayne Gretzky, Phil Mahre, Barry Sanders, and Terry Sawchuk. Demers’ artwork has been shown in exhibitions in the U.S. and Canada, including
“The Great One”, at Gretzky’s in Toronto, Ontario.
