We are excited to work with Aaron Fenton and BXP, owner of Embarcadero Center, on early visioning to revitalize San Francisco’s Embarcadero Plaza.

The reimagining of the prominently located, yet underutilized, plaza would bring new life and energy to downtown San Francisco and further connect residents, office workers and others to the waterfront.

As HOK’s Brian Jencek told urban design critic John King: “We want to explore the question of what this space could be.”

Employee retention is more important than ever, and law firms are no exception. The cost of replacing an employee can range from half to two four the employee’s annual salary. Law firms are looking to transform their offices with a future-proof design that can help recruit top talent, support their clients and a hybrid workforce, and adapt to changing needs.

In the Legal chapter of HOK Forward, HOK’s Caitlin Turner and Tara Roscoe explore how law firms are adapting to new ways of working and activating the office as a flexible, future-ready tool to meet the unique needs and challenges of their industry.

Combining surveys, benchmarking data and interdisciplinary case studies, our findings and recommendations explore how the next generation of law firms can support hybrid work, reimagine their real estate portfolio, balance meeting and private spaces, incorporate new technologies and curate amenities to optimize their workspace.

After deeming the buildings on its nearly 150-year-old academic medical center beyond renovation, Eskenazi Health negotiated a land swap with Indiana University. Eskenazi traded its outdated facilities for a large parcel of land just west of downtown Indianapolis.

This exchange gave Eskenazi the space it needed to build a state-of-the-art, patient-friendly, 1.3-million-sq.-ft. hospital and health campus.

Eskenazi Health is one of the world’s largest LEED Gold healthcare campuses. The environmentally responsible certification spans four different building types: healthcare, office, restaurant and utility plants.

HOK Forward is now live! 💫

The office has long been a cornerstone of how we work and live—a place for collaboration, team building
and belonging. With ongoing social and technological changes, however, organizations must balance staff
needs and preferences with business goals while adapting to new ways of working.

Our 2024 HOK Forward report explores the differences between a workplace people feel compelled to
visit versus one they want to experience. The right solution involves asking the right questions:

⭐️What are the work styles and needs of staff and the industry?
⭐️How does the office add value to staff personally and professionally, supporting their work, well-
being and connections with others?
⭐️If people can work effectively from home, what is the new role of the office?

Drawing from data across the legal, professional services and government sectors, the report offers
insights and practical recommendations on reimagining the workplace as a destination of its own. It
explores issues such as hybridity, flexibility, carbon emissions and the prevalence of mental and physical
disabilities, uncovering what employees truly want from their workplace.

As we all navigate this new era of work, the 2024 HOK Forward report provides valuable insights into the
changes shaping the future of the workplace.

HOK’s planning and landscape architecture team collaborated with Workday, the City of Pleasanton and Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) to support the ongoing development of this transit-oriented development.

The landscape installation transforms a parking lot next to a BART regional transit station into a welcoming, publicly-accessible outdoor space. Everyone arriving at the campus—whether by public transportation, bicycle or automobile—can access and engage with the park’s sustainable natural resources.

The native, self-sustaining landscape celebrates the identity of the iconic California foothills while supporting resilience in the dry climate. New parklands, trails and outdoor amenities connect more than five acres of open space. Sculptural landforms and seating areas link the park design to the surrounding Tri-Valley foothill topography.

Congratulations to the winners of the HOK Futures Design Challenge! 💚 Now in its eighth year, HOK Futures asks Philadelphia-area design students to engage in local development trends through creative design solutions.

This year’s program challenged university students to design a new environmental education center at Cobb’s Creek Park, a recreational greenway and watershed in West Philadelphia that serves as a connecting point between the local community, natural resources and surrounding urban area.

With a growing need for environmental reconnection, the competition asked students to design the education center with expanded programming to encourage sustainability, ecology, healthy eating, agriculture and active lifestyle choices in connection to the watershed.

A big thank you to our interior jurors, architecture jurors and to our generous sponsors without whom the awards program would not be possible.

We are excited for the opening The Allen, a new mixed-use district just west of downtown Houston. HOK oversaw master planning for the six-acre development and designed its first two buildings: a 35-story luxury hotel/residential tower and a four-story retail podium.

Developed by , The Allen embraces its location next to Buffalo Bayou Park through design and connections. The buildings’ sleek, contoured forms mimic the undulating, organic rhythm of the bayou. Elevated terraces and ground-level patios provide visible and physical links to the park’s trails and greenways.

The tower features multiple programming types, including ground-floor retail; on levels 5-13; and on the top 22 floors. In addition to 134 guest rooms, the hotel includes a sky lobby, spa, 300-seat ballroom and seventh-floor terrace with a pool and views onto downtown.

Subtle, curved massing accentuates the tower’s stacked volumes, with a striking cantilever denoting the transition from hotel to condos. Private residences include individual balconies (some with plunge pools) and shared amenities that include an indoor lap pool, conference rooms and private lounge.
