🍲 For our fifth-ever virtual , we would like to highlight Meskerem! Meskerem serves authentic, mouthwatering Ethiopian cuisine, including a wide array of 100%-vegan dishes. All items on their vegetarian menu, which features roughly a dozen delectable dishes, are also 100%-vegan. Better yet, they offer a vegetarian combo that allows you to sample the majority of these sublime entrees!

📖 ABOUT:

Founded in March 2007, Meskerem is known for their excellent and authentic traditional Ethiopian cuisine. The restaurant is named after the first month of the Ethiopian calendar. It is the most favored month in Ethiopia because it ends the three month long rainy season and begins a new year marked by sunny and pleasant weather. Meskerem is a symbol of new beginning, new life, joy, and renewal of hope for all people. Meskerem has also consistently won a number of voter’s choice awards for their stunning cuisine over the years.

📋 REVIEW:

A few days before my first birthday as a vegan, my parents decided to research which restaurants they could bring me to. We decided on Meskerem after some back and forth. I was initially apprehensive as I had grown to distrust most restaurants. But the staff reassured me all the items on their vegetarian combo were also vegan. So began a family tradition of attending Meskerem on 10 of my past 12 birthdays.

Their staff has been incredibly cordial toward me ever since, even bringing me free mango juice on each of my birthdays we have celebrated there. Two of my favorite dishes in the entire universe are included on their vegetarian combo: tikil gomen—fresh cabbage, potatoes, and carrots sautéed with garlic, ginger and curry—and fosolia—sautéed fresh string beans, carrots, and onions with tomato sauce.

Whenever I feel unusually stressed, haggardly, or otherwise distraught, I often turn to Meskerem and their vegetarian combo for comfort. I have eaten—and thoroughly enjoyed—over a dozen meals there over the past seven years entirely alone in between my birthdays (I like to celebrate my birthday with other people, but otherwise I prefer to eat alone with the company of my thoughts). I even ventured to Meskerem last night to cheer myself up after increased levels of malaise since Lily, my hamster, died roughly a week and a half ago; their rejuvenative food has helped restore me to vigor.
