On June 19, 1865, in Galveston Bay, Texas, some 250,000 enslaved black people were freed by executive decree. This day became known as Juneteenth, or Freedom Day, by the newly freed people in Texas.

This Juneteenth, Missouri Baptist University celebrates the victories of the past while recognizing the opportunities of the present as we commit to pray and work for a brighter, more equitable future for all.

Missouri Baptist University is excited to launch the John Mason Peck Institute this fall. Named for a pioneer missionary who founded the first Baptist church in St. Louis and established schools for African American men and women during the early nineteenth century, the John Mason Peck Institute will provide scholarship programs for students in an eligible Christian Ministry degree program. Students can receive financial support as Peck Scholars or as Peck Fellows, both of which provide opportunities for ministry training and service. In addition, the Peck Institute will offer monthly workshops, called “Peck Labs,” to equip students in areas of Christian formation and leadership. The fixed, upward gaze of MBU's spartan statue reminds us of words like these from Psalm 123:1: "To you I lift up my eyes, O you who are enthroned in the heavens!"

Professor of History Dr. Keith Beutler is featured in the spring issue of Advance Magazine, a publication of the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities. The issue focuses on civil discourse in an election year, and Dr. Beutler contributes to the article, "Recovering the Transcendent Values of the Church During Tumultuous Times." Beutler will also be featured in the summer issue of MBU Magazine along with other faculty members as they explore the theme of civil discourse from a multi-disciplinary perspective.

Associate Professor of English Dr. Matthew Bardowell is the winner of the 2024 Missouri Baptist University Distinguished Professor Award. Dr. Bardowell was honored at the University's 52nd commencement ceremony on April 30. Each year, MBU recognizes one professor who exhibits outstanding classroom teaching, campus leadership, exemplary course development, scholarship, integration of faith and learning, and strong relationships with students both within the classroom and across campus. The award includes a $1,000 stipend and a brass apple. Congratulations, Dr. Bardowell!

Congratulations to our Spartan baseball players and coaches for winning the AMC championship and an automatic bid to the NAIA national tournament. One of our fans commented about this photo: “This photo says everything about why MBU is special. Trophy held high, banner wrapped, hats off, heads bowed in prayer, with the AD’s arm over one of your shoulders, and the University president’s arm over the other. I love this picture.” We couldn’t agree more.
