http://dschool.stanford.edu The d.school is a hub for innovators at Stanford. This is the core of what we do.
Students and faculty in engineering, medicine, business, law, the humanities, sciences, and education find their way here to take on the world’s messy problems together. Human values are at the heart of our collaborative approach. We focus on creating spectacularly transformative learning experiences. Along the way, our students develop a process for producing creative solutions to even the most complex challenges they tackle.
“I came into the program with high expectations, given my role in innovating for social good, and those expectations were exceeded. The coaches and facilitators are world-class, and the skills I learned are directly applicable in driving organizational change and community impact. It's a must for anyone serious about designing for social impact.”
Munir Ahmad, Global Innovation Lead for the Aga Khan Foundation

Our colorful yearbooks are ready to greet guests as they visit the d.school.
Graphic Designer Daniel Frumhoff, who worked in collaboration with Ivo Brouwer to develop our latest edition, shares more about the creative approach they took while designing:
“The Surround typeface felt right for this project because it had a joyful spirit. It’s crisp, optimistic, and unique. We paired this with lettering that had a human touch: crafted, textured, and accessible. This year’s yearbook continues to build on the themes from last year where overlapping joyful colors represent the intersections of educators, students, and community coming together to share ideas. And parts that made a whole: both inclusive and collaborative. We evolved the color palette a bit more and created a distinct color set for each section to celebrate the d.school's interdisciplinary approach to design!”

“I’ll admit to being skeptical of an overly optimistic view of design. On my worst days I’m more Papanek than Stanford’s d.school, but what Doorley and Carter are doing in the book is not blind optimism; rather, it’s a reclaiming of design as a future-oriented practice, available to everyone. In this moment when design can feel like a tool for profit, for markets, for power, Assembling Tomorrow paints design as a tool for everyone who is interested in building better futures and how to use that tool with care, inclusion, and rigor.”

The day before our Design Diploma Ceremony, the d.school hosted a luncheon for our MS Design students to share their 2024 Masters' projects with family and friends in town for graduation.
The afternoon was filled with pride as loved ones learned more about the work the graduates have invested in over the last few years, projects which focused on using AI for healthcare challenges, scaling design education, speculative design, and more.
This week Carissa Carter made a return to her alma mater, Williams College, to sign copies of her new book Assembling Tomorrow. Carissa was joined by one of her biggest mentors from Williams, Rónadh Cox, who is actually featured in one of the chapters of the book which focuses on shapeshifting.
Carissa was also accompanied by her original mentor, her mother, who joined the event to snap a few photos.

Select images from a workshop recently held in the d.school printshop—Variations on "Kew Gardens" by Virginia Woolf.
In 1919 Woolf typeset, printed, bound and published the short story Kew Gardens on her own private press, The Hogarth Press. The success of the short story propelled the Hogarth Press from a hobby to a professional publishing house and enabled Woolf to become, as she put it in her diary, “The only woman in England free to write what [she] liked.” Woolf's access to print materials and practices was pivotal in developing her new style of writing.
In this adaptation, words from "Kew Gardens" were cut up into single words and then re-composed as letterpress and Risograph prints, attached together again into a new collaborative work made in the new printshop, pointing at the material constraints and the physical writing process involved in working with movable type.
The workshop was initiated by Dr. Alice Staveley (Stanford), in collaboration with Dr. Claire Battershill (University of Toronto), Owen Hipwell (Stanford d.school), Dr. Ane Thon Knutsen (The Oslo National Academy of The Arts), and aided by Truls Solerød Johnsen, inspired by the method from Thon Knutsens installation of "Kew Gardens" recently shown at the Fresno State Library for the 33rd International conference on Virginia Woolf.
"We wrote the book to explore the hidden forces shaping this moment and to apply a designer’s perspective on building a better future. As our creations transform us, we must change to meet them. A design mindset – focused on noticing, planning, and acting resourcefully – is more essential than ever, and this is what we explore in the book."

"Chasing possibilities and acting responsibly sometimes seem like they are in conflict, but we need them both. It would be a shame if we sacrificed potential on the altar of anxiety. We need unapologetic optimism and radical responsibility side by side. We should be building on successes without ignoring the troublesome parts. Even utopias need a sewage system."
