"One of my favorite ideas from HumBio is this concept called “emergent properties.” It describes how complex things happen when individual elements interact. For example, our breath just now. The oxygen is in the air, and the cells in our lungs. On their own, they may seem like random, unassuming bits of matter, but together they undergo this beautiful process of respiration. They bring us life. And they fuel our moments of connection like these. Our Stanford journey has kinda been like a deep breath, the minty kind of course. We were drawn into Stanford as curious individuals from different backgrounds; some started on Zoom and others, like me, began on campus, took a mini detour during Covid, and came back. But somehow, we all ended up in the GeoCorner studying, of all things, ourselves in the core. [...]

Even as we diffused into different concentrations, we saw this idea of emergence during our campus interactions. Whether it was sharing our research at HB-REx, volunteering at the Cardinal Free Clinics, or crying together in chemistry, we remember these moments not only because of what we did, but also because of the people we did them with.

What’s amazing about HumBio is how it expands our understanding of the world not only through its interdisciplinary nature – biology, politics, and culture – but also in the way we come together to share ideas and work towards collective action. As HumBio graduates, we now have the ability and responsibility to lead effectively because we understand that true and meaningful change comes from connecting seemingly disparate elements to inform complex solutions."

"Classmates, family, friends, faculty, I want you all to make a pact to yourselves to start doing random combinations of things that set YOUR soul on fire, no matter how random they seem. According to society, you are obligated to stick to the one preset career path (one, not plural) that will make you the most financially stable. But, my fellow new post-grads, we have the privilege to be here today, graduating from Stanford, with the tools to build entirely new roads in uncharted territory.

That journey started with you all choosing your unique concentrations, so continue to wander down those promising paths. Exploring the different intersections of interests in your soul is when ideas are born. I decided to travel down two seemingly separate roads, cognitive neuroscience and screen-acting, not knowing that I would come across such a cool intersection and make it my home. [...]

These journeys are sure to bring you to a fruitful, fulfilling destination, and these destinations are where self-discovery is made. Where some groundbreaking questions are asked, and others are answered. Where new knowledge is unearthed, and personal growth is championed."

Effective science communication, both verbal and written, is a core skill we aim to instill in every Human Biology student. In HumBio 113, The Human Plant Connection, Dr. Katherine Preston guides students in not only understanding plant morphology but also in analyzing scientific papers and honing their science communication skills through a public writing project about tree species found on campus. "You don’t often hear people say the math community, or the econ community, or the history community. But we say “the HUMBIO community” more often than we say “Arillaga.” That’s because one of the most unique and powerful things about HUMBIO is our connection with one another. And this rings true for no one as much as this class, the class of 2024. [...]

We bonded with each other and this major first, and that made us stronger. We support one another in our innovative projects, our ground-breaking research, and our demanding thesis. In our extracurricular endeavors, our community service goals, and our future career paths, whatever they may be. Because this is our educational family. And as we prepare to leave, it might feel like that first day of sophomore year all over again - excited, scared. But I know this family persists beyond our time at Stanford, and we will be just as eager to learn from and support one another in the coming weeks, months, and years.

"You are each an entirely unique constellation of abilities, interests, experiences, and histories. In fact, as a HumBio major even your educational path was entirely your own. What you have to offer, no one else can. Your history and your training, combined with your natural brilliance, are gifts that the world needs.

But remember that while Stanford degrees and ambition are really important, they’re not the whole picture. I hope that you will also reflect today on how you can use what you have learned here to lift everyone around you: your family and friends, your coworkers and your communities. Maya Angelou once said, 'people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.' Join the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) for a two-day symposium exploring the complexities around s*x, gender, and genomics by considering them in their scientific, ethical, and historical contexts.

These interdisciplinary conversations are intended to aid scientists, policymakers, and the public in understanding the many dimensions of s*x and s*x characteristics and their relationships with gender within a genomic context.

Check out this great event happening this Friday on climate and health research!

Marianthi-Anna Kioumourtzoglou is an environmental engineer and epidemiologist. She holds a Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH) from the Environmental Sciences and Engineering Department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Doctor of Science (ScD) in Environmental Health from the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health, where she also conducted her post-doctoral fellowship.

She is currently an Associate Professor at the Department of Environmental Health Sciences at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health. Her research focuses on characterizing the impacts of air pollution and other climate-sensitive exposures on human health, with an emphasis on applied statistical issues related to climate and health research, including quantifying and correcting for exposure measurement error, exposure prediction uncertainty propagation, and assessment of high-dimensional and complex exposures in health analyses. Additionally, her studies mainly have identified vulnerable sub-populations and characterized how risks may vary across neighborhood-level and other urban characteristics.
