Buddha Mountain 观音山 (2010)

Actors: Silvia Chang, Fang Bing Bing, Chen Bo-lin
Buddha Mountain begins with the story of three young people from a town in Sichuan: Nanfeng who runs away from her broken family, Ding Bo who does not get along with his father, and Feizao who comes from a wealthy but uncaring family. The trio spend most of their time together experiencing life with no clear directions in life. With the renovation of the house they are renting, they are forced to move to a new place. Their new landlady, Yueqin is a Peking Opera performer with a bitter outlook on life due to her tough life. Living under the same roof, conflicts repeatedly arise between Yueqin and the three young tenants. However, as time goes by, these four lonely and loss souls begin to find comfort and warmth among each other, despite their unhappy past.

Calligraphy, the writing of characters and an art which developed over many centuries in China is recognized as an “Intangible Cultural Heritage” by UNESCO. Mr. Tianzhou Zhao’s first class was so popular he has returned to lead this hands-on calligraphy class. Bring out the artist in yourself!!

Released to coincide with the 90th anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party, "Beginning of the Great Revival” details the historic events surrounding what is referred to as the Chinese Revolution, the period from 1911 to 1921, when Sun Yat-sen overthrew the Qing Dynasty and planted the roots of what has become today's Chinese Communist government. The story shows the beginnings of the country's most influential first-generation leaders, including Mao Zedong, Chiang Kai-shek and Zhou Enlai.

Join us for the film " Red Sorghum, the story of a young woman working in a sorghum liquor distillery in rural Shandong province during the Second Sino-Japanese War (July 7, 1937 – September 9, 1945) Based on the novel Red Sorghum: A Novel of China by Nobel laureate Mo Yan, the film marked the directorial debut of internationally acclaimed Zhang Yimou, and the acting debut of film star Gong Li. With its lush and l***y portrayal of peasant life, it immediately propelled Zhang to the forefront of the Fifth Generation directors. Admission: Free. Open to all.

Free Workshop "Traditional Chinese Papercutting, JIAN ZHI", October 24, Friday at 4:00PM, Wang Center Room 201 - Confucius Institute at Stony Brook University
Join us for a "Traditional Chinese Papercutting" workshop with Ms Weiwei Zhang. China, where paper was invented, has a long history of the decorative folk art “psaligraphy” or, jianzhi, which means ‘cut paper’. Paper cuts can represent wishes for good health, good fortune and are used as decoration during the Chinese New Year and other festivals as home décor and are also used as patterns for other artwork. One of the most popular of the decorative arts, it is such an intrinsic and important part of Chinese culture that it is recognized as an “Intangible Cultural Heritage” by UNESCO in 2009.
