A New England delegation consisting of NECSEMA members Tom Frawley (Summit Distributing), Stephen Garrett (Volta Oil/Garrett's Family Market) and NECSEMA Executive Director Peter Brennan met with several members of Congress at their offices in Washington, D.C., to advocate for federal issues of importance to our industry including the ๐๐ซ๐๐๐ข๐ญ ๐๐๐ซ๐ ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐ฉ๐๐ญ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐๐๐ญ, the ๐๐ซ๐๐ง๐ฌ๐ฉ๐จ๐ซ๐ญ๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐๐๐๐ฎ๐ซ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐๐๐ซ๐๐๐ง๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐จ๐๐๐ซ๐ง๐ข๐ณ๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐๐๐ญ, and ๐๐๐ ๐๐ฒ๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐ฆ ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐ฉ๐๐ญ๐ข๐๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐๐ฉ๐ ๐ซ๐๐๐๐ฌ.

Tell Congress: Cosponsor the Credit Card Competition Actโโโ
โ
UPDATE: May 2, 2024 from EMA: "Senator Marshall (R-KS) has filed the "The Credit Card Competition Act" (CCCA) as an amendment to the Federal Aviation administration (FAA) reauthorization legislation currently pending on the Senate floor.โ EMA urges all jobbers and retailers to reach out to their Senators and ask them to VOTE YES on the Credit Card Competition Act amendment."
โAccording to NACS: "Credit card swipe fees for the convenience store industry have increased a staggering 82% over the last 3 years and now stand at $19.5 billion. But bipartisan legislation in Congress would tackle these fees and help protect Main Street businesses from the megabanks on Wall Street. NACS proudly supports the Credit Card Competition Act of 2023 (S. 1838/H.R. 3881), bipartisan, bicameral legislation."โโ NECSEMA proudly supports this legislation too and asks you to write Congress today!

The SJC has careened down a slippery slope by affirming Brooklineโs ban on all ni****ne product purchases by all adults born this century. We are reviewing the ruling, but it is clearly rooted in authoritarianism by supporting the legal idea that there is no such thing as an adult with inalienable rights unless those rights are first granted to a citizen by government.
The ruling sets a disturbing precedent by granting authority to local boards of health to decide who is โadult enoughโ to make decisions, regardless of what state or federal laws say on the issue. The SJC decision says that local officials, whether elected or appointed, can now ban products that they donโt agree with, ignore the state legislature, and create their own arbitrary bans.
You may not use any to***co or ni****ne product, so you may think that this decision wonโt impact you. Perhaps it wonโt, yet. Eventually, though, the zealots will take aim at something that you, as an adult, have reached the โlegal ageโ to enjoy.
The SJC has decided a 50, 60, or, 70-year old cannot choose to purchase to***co or ni****ne. What products are next?
NECSEMA and our partners are examining all legal options to protect our membersโ rights and the civil liberties of the citizens of Massachusetts.
Peter A. Brennan
Executive Director

CONGRATS TO MEMBERS VOLTA OIL, RAPID REFILL AND GARRETTโS FAMILY MARKET; RAISING MORE THAN $170K IN CAMPAIGNโS 11TH YEAR!
PURPLE PUMP UP CAMPAIGN SURPASSES $1 MILLION IN TOTAL FUNDRAISING TOWARDS ALZHEIMERโS CARE, SUPPORT, AND RESEARCH PLYMOUTH, MA โ Plymouthโs family-owned Volta Oil announced today it has raised more than $170,000 during its annual seven-week campaign to benefit the Alzheimerโs Association โ bringing the total amount raised in its 11-year history to $1.1 million. Purple Pump Up is the largest convenience store cause-marketing campaign in the country to bolster awareness and raise funds towards the care, support, and research efforts of the Alzheimerโs Association.
โI applaud our store personnel and the Purple Pump Up team members for another successful campaign,โ said Jim Garrett, Chairman of Volta Oil Company.
Eighteen Rapid Refill Convenience and Garrettโs Family Market locations throughout Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island participated in the campaign from May 27-July 18, allowing customers the option to give donations both inside stores and at the gas pumps.
โIt is incredible to see Purple Pump Up reach the $1 million milestoneโ a clear testament to Volta Oilโs commitment, and the generosity of its customers, to make a difference in the fight to end Alzheimerโsโ said Jim Wessler, CEO of the Alzheimerโs Association Massachusetts/New Hampshire Chapter. โWe are so grateful for this partnership which continues to have a direct impact supporting vital research and essential programs and services in our local communities.โ
In recognition of the Alzheimerโs Associationโs โThe Longest Dayโ fundraising and awareness effort โ an initiative on and around the summer solstice in which people from across the world fight the darkness of Alzheimer's through a fundraising activity of their choice โ locations also donated 5 cents from every gallon of gas and diesel sold between June 20th and 21st.
โI am also grateful to our dedicated sponsors who never fail to show their support for our communities through their generous donations,โ Garrett added.
Platinum sponsors of the 2022 Purple Pump Up include Coca Cola, Coremark, Global, and Kelliher Corbett Group. Gold sponsors include New England Ice Cream, Shell, Webster Bank, Citgo, Pepsi, Altria, Gray, Gray, & Gray and GSTV.
For more information about the campaign visit purplepumpup.org.
