Have you ever woke up with neck or upper back pain while traveling on vacation? You may have slept on a pillow you were not used to and this put stress on your neck and upper back.

A pillow that is too flat can cause your head to drop down while sleeping on your side, putting stress on your neck. Pillows that are too thick can cause your head to lift up, also causing stress on the neck.

Every person is different and it is hard to recommend the best pillow for everyone. One pillow that I like is made by a company called core products:

This pillow has an indentation in the center allowing the head to drop into while the raised edges around the pillow help to support the neck while sleeping on your back or your side.

There are many things that can be contributing to pain and symptoms. Sleeping on a mattress that is either old and needs replaced, or sleeping on a new mattress that you purchased, but is not the best fit for your body, will only lead to more problems.

My patients ask me what is the best mattress and this is a difficult question to answer because everyone is different. A mattress that is a medium density (not too firm creating too much pressure on your muscles and joints, but not too soft where your postural muscles are over working) is usually the best option.

I do like sleep number beds and similar beds that have adjustable settings (this is especially helpful if you and your partner like different firmnesses in mattresses).

One sign that it might be time to change mattresses is pain only upon waking up (your pillow might also be a contributing factor).
