A nod to ESF’s history, in honor of women’s history month
In honor of International Women's Day, we're sharing some facts about the history of women at ESF. Thanks to PhD student Autumn Elniski for sharing her research on the subject!
Did you know ESF's first female student enrolled in 1915? Hazel Clere enrolled in the general forestry curriculum but did not finish her degree at the school.
More women enrolled in 1938--a graduate student in Forest Recreation--and in 1943--an undergraduate--who also did not complete the programs.
The first woman to graduate from ESF was Ruth Worret, who transferred from SU in 1945 and was also the first woman to attend the required 'summer camp,' with the declaration, “I can take anything the boys can.” She proved herself right, graduating in 1947. Barbara Hennessy and Mildred Kocic joined the Pulp and Paper department for the fall semester of 1944, and graduated the year after Ruth, in 1948.
In 1993, ESF President Ross Whaley signed off on an official action plan to improve the climate for women on campus. By 1994, the number of female faculty had increased from three women to eight, and the Women's Caucus was established.
Still active, the Women's Caucus is a group of female students--both undergraduate and graduate--faculty, staff, and other members of the ESF community. It serves as a mentoring network, and sponsors seminars, coffee breaks, speaker series, and other opportunities to support the professional development of women.
As of 2016, 809 undergraduate women were enrolled at ESF, comprising 46.2% of the undergraduate population at the college. ESF currently employs 28 female Assistant and Associate Professors, or 37.8% of the population of such Professors at ESF, which is a 4X increase from 1994.
In 2010, Forbes released a special edition of their higher education rankings, in which ESF placed 3rd in the country for supporting women students in STEM.
There are still improvements to be made: increasing women and particularly women of color in college leadership and faculty positions, and improving their distribution throughout our academic departments, and providing our female students with more preparation and tools to succeed in their professions, where in many cases the number of employed women remains low. But we're proud to have come so far and to stand as a leader for women in STEM!

On this International Women's Day... take time out to learn about a vitally important member of the women's suffrage movement, who was basically written out of history.
Her name was Matilda Joslyn Gage. Born in Cicero, lived in Fayetteville.... she is as important as Susan B. Anthony (Gage wrote many of her speeches) and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. But because of her progressive beliefs, she was seen as far too radical... and disappeared from the history books.
Gage is a fascinating woman. Many of her influences come from the Haudenosaunee women of the area. She was part of the underground railroad, she spoke at the National Woman's Rights Convention (IN SYRACUSE) in 1852, and she is the mother-in-law of L. Frank Baum. Baum, of course, the creator of one of American literature's first female hero's: Dorothy Gale.
Gage's influences touched so much of our culture and society, and yet so little is known about her; even in her own hometown. You can learn more about Matilda Joslyn Gage by reading the nearly 40 books written about her that are available here in the OCPL.
You can also visit the Matilda Joslyn Gage Center on East Genesee Street in Fayetteville.
A little bit about the group that brought Kids’ Day to SUNY ESF!
The Women's Caucus, originally starting in the 1990s, serves as a resource for women and woman-identifying people, as well as anyone with a family in need of resources.
Putting on anticipated events is a hallmark of the group, such as Take Our Kids to Work Day, CNY Girls' Summit, Coffee Break, the Speaker Series, and more. This group is inclusive and always looking to connect with more people!

Beyond COVID-19: How Do Engineering and Technology Transform the Microbiology Landscape
Presenter: Douglas Yung, PhD
Douglas Yung is an Assistant Teaching Professor in the Department of Biomedical and Chemical Engineering at Syracuse University and the Director for the Bioengineering undergraduate program. He earned his B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering and Mathematics from UCLA in 2003 and a Ph.D. in Bioengineering from Caltech in 2008. He worked as a NASA Postdoctoral Fellow at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California on sensor development, microfluidics, and bacterial spore viability. His work includes the anthrax smoke detector, spacecraft surface sterilization, and determination of life longevity by detecting spores in extreme environments.
Douglas has long been intrigued by the interfacing of microbes with engineering tools on a micro- and nano-scale. He is unraveling methods to rapidly assess the viability of superbugs and harness energy from extremophiles using a combination of electrochemical, optical techniques and MEMS devices. He is an advocate of a hybrid teaching and learning environment replete with project-based hands-on work, experiential activities and peer collaboration, a style departing from traditional top-down expository pedagogies.

Kids...to work?
Yup! Along with thousands of other workplaces, SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry invites children to explore careers by joining their adult that works or studies on campus. Rather than shadow this adult through classes and meetings that build upon materials the kids have not yet learned, we plan a class day of their own. Kids work with environmental and chemical engineers, resource managers, chemists, field and lab biologists, landscape architects, and other environmental professionals to learn how they, too, can “Improve Our World.”
