As we prepare for tomorrow's opening ceremonies of the summer Olympics in Paris, the University Archives is looking back to the 1900 Paris games and the legacy of one of Syracuse University's first Olympians: Myer Prinstein.
Born in Szczuczyn, Poland in 1878, Prinstein's family immigrated to New York in 1883 and soon settled in Syracuse. He enrolled at SU in 1897, where he quickly showed his prowess in track and field. Prinstein set a world record in the long jump in the spring of his freshman year, and just two years later represented the Orange and the U.S. in the second modern Olympic games. He returned from the 1900 Paris games with a gold medal in the hop, step and jump (now called the triple jump) and a silver medal in the long jump, making him the first Jewish and Polish-American Olympic gold medalist. In fact, Prinstein nearly won two gold medals during his first Olympic showing but, along with many other athletes from Methodist universities, was barred from competing on Sundays. As such, his jumps were bested by just a quarter-inch. Prinstein went on to compete in both the 1904 and 1906 Olympic games, earning three additional gold medals. He has been posthumously inducted into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame, the National Track and Field Hall of Fame, and the Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame. This image of the 1900 Paris Exposition Team from the 1902 Onondagan can be found in the Archives' Syracuse University Yearbook Collection. Prinstein is standing furthest to the right.
