As United Methodists, and with the General Board of Church and Society, we understand our call to transform the world involves personal, social and civic righteousness.

The relationships we form in our communities, often through our direct service and mercy ministries, lead us to be advocates for justice. We cannot remain silent when we witness our neighbors impacted by broken social, economic and political systems that result in poverty, conflict, and oppression.
Advocating alongside our neighbors, we call leaders to account and demand policies and practices that reflect our understanding of justice and dignity for all. While the journey toward justice is long, God encourages us and sustains us through community.
Church and Society educates, equips and connects advocates with other United Methodists and faith and community-based partners as, together, we build a movement for justice.

Sunday, 13.—At seven I preached at Haxey on “What must I do to be saved?” Thence I went to Wroote, of which (as well as Epworth) my father was rector for several years. Mr. Whitelamb offering me the church, I preached in the morning on “Ask, and it shall be given you”; in the afternoon, on the difference between the righteousness of the law and the righteousness of faith. But the church could not contain the people, many of whom came from far and, I trust, not in vain.
At six I preached for the last time in Epworth churchyard (planning to leave the town the next morning) to a vast multitude gathered together from all parts, on the beginning of our Lord’s Sermon on the Mount. I continued among them for nearly three hours, and yet we scarcely knew how to part. Oh, let none think his labor of love is lost because the fruit does not immediately appear! Nearly forty years did my father labor here, but he saw little fruit of all his labor. I took some pains among this people too, and my strength also seemed spent in vain; but now the fruit appeared. There were scarcely any in the town on whom either my father or I had taken any pains formerly but the seed, sown so long since, now sprang up, bringing forth repentance and remission of sins. ~ John Wesley (journal, June 13, 1742)

Meeting on Public Safety and Crime
WNA has organized this meeting with City of Syracuse leaders in response to our community's expressed concerns about crime and public safety. The meeting is meant to inform and discuss recent upticks in certain types of crimes, and address resident anxieties, frustrations, and some misconceptions. Mayor Walsh, Deputy Mayor Owens, Police Chief Cecile, and other elected officials and agency reps will be present to listen to concerns, explain procedures and policies, take questions, and solicit community action.
To ensure the most efficient use of our time, we encourage submission of written comments and questions beforehand. We will try to post some answers as we get them - before and after the meeting. A list of received questions will be available to all participants before the meeting. Questions can be posted on FB, or sent to [email protected].
To discuss specific experiences and work collectively for crime prevention we urge you to participate in the Neighborhood Watch.
Beware you do not fall into the second sort of enthusiasm -- fancying you have those gifts from God which you have not. Trust not in visions or dreams; in sudden impressions, or strong impulses of any kind. Remember, it is not by these you are to know what is the will of God on any particular occasion, but by applying the plain Scripture rule, with the help of experience and reason, and the ordinary assistance of the Spirit of God. Do not lightly take the name of God in your mouth; do not talk of the will of God on every trifling occasion: but let your words, as well as your actions, be all tempered with reverence and godly fear. ~ John Wesley (“The Nature of Enthusiasm”

What do you imagine being the reward of generosity?
Proverbs 22 has a lot to teach:
"Those who are generous are blessed, for they share their bread with the poor.
Do not rob the poor because they are poor or crush the afflicted at the gate,
for the LORD pleads their cause and despoils of life those who despoil them."
Maybe the reward is the connection... from one person to another.

But in this may we rejoice, that we are in the hand of a God who never did, nor ever can exert his power in an act of oppression, injustice, or cruelty! ... We may rejoice that Almighty Goodness "will not suffer us to be tempted above what we are able, but will with the temptation make a way to escape [that we may be able to bear it.]" ~ Susanna Wesley (letter to "Jacky," dated June 8, 1725)
