Hello from the DIREWOLF team. I hope your are all staying healthy and strong during these unprecedented times. For myself, being a doctorate student has required intense focus of the past several months. One might say that I perhaps forced progress too hard with everything that is going on... (school, business, and life). The uncertainty of COVID-19 has also caused additional stress and uncertainty. I have decided to practice a pause of DWPTS for the forseeable future. Thank you for your likes and interest. The mission of DWPTS remains strong, and we are excited to move forward with you all in the future.

In these incredibly hard times for so many of us, suffering is inevitable. Jobs are lost. Kids were ripped away from school. Parents everywhere are struggling to feed their families without a pay check and without school. Neighbors are fighting over food stamps. And negativity fills the air.

My family. Today I challenge you to weather the storm. And keep your chin up and eyes focused for the sake of others.
——
This is hard on everyone. Some more than others. But it’s hard on everyone. It’s also hard on your kids, whether they show it or not. Your kids and your neighbors need YOU to be the example to look up to. Be the bigger man or woman.

Spend less time fear mongering, feeling sorry for yourselves, and watching the click bait news...
do something that I consider very worth while with this extra time. Give that extra time of day to your children. Be a little more patient. Love a little harder. And speak a little kinder.

I know it’s corny. But it’s what OUR society needs now more than ever. Look out for your family. Look out for your neighbor. And make sure you’re doing everything in your power to put on your best face each day for those that look up to you.

I get it. It’s hard to ask for help. And it’s hard when times are lean to concern yourself with anything other than your immediate family. You may barely be getting your family through by the skin of your teeth during this absurd time in humanity at a large.

SHOULDER PAIN🚨

I’ll be honest. This is a tough one to be concise and provide you guys with palatable takeaways. But here goes my best effort.
——
presents with general shoulder instability and hyper-mobility. He likes lifting weights, and like most people, likes to move heavy weight. The issue arises not due to heavy weight causing injuries, but rather due to the stabilizing musculature NOT providing his shoulder complex and joint the stability it needs to function pain free.
——
——
According to the literature, synergistic balance and adequate strength of the shoulder external and internal rotators is critical to preventing shoulder pain that arises from hyper-mobility of the GH joint.
——
——
Additionally, scapular (shoulder blade) stability and function is equally as critical when effective shoulder complex motion is desired. To not beat around the bush....we all want effective shoulder complex motion. It’s how you do anything more demanding of the complex (such as bench press, shoulder press, or throwing actions) without any pain or potential for damage to the supporting ligaments of the shoulder.

I’m not a PT formally yet, so I don’t want to claim that level of understanding...
But my advice for Nick (message me for more details ) is to dial back the weight and complexity of your motions in the weight room.

Build up your rhomboids and serratus anterior to keep your shoulder blade pressed against your ribs. And work on some high rep, low load banded shoulder ER and IR to address the GH joint more directly.
——
Further contact me to considering checking out your shoulder complex range of motion, which is likely limited in some way. Some daily mobility work would very likely help as well.
——

This was one of the exercises I spent years coming to understand the complex demands of while completing my masters degree in the biomechanics lab.
——
This with help from my fellow colleague and Phd student, the brilliant ....
Hit him with a follow for amazing biomechanics study insights, and pictures of his dog Maru..

——
The weighted lunge 🏋️ is an excellent way to recruit the hip extensor musculature. People tend to like big strong glutes. Glutes are also nice because they are the human body’s most powerful and influential prime mover when used effectively. They finally help alleviate LE pain down the kinetic chain when strong, stable, and firing optimally.
——
——
To increase the demands of the glutes while doing this exercise...
——
🚨YOU CAN TRY 1 OF 3 THINGS🚨
1) Increase your forward lean
2) Increase the weight
3) Anchor/ root your foot better
——
1: Increasing forward trunk lean imposes a larger elongation of the Gluteus Maximus (big butt muscle) through a larger ROM, leading to increased net activation (muscle is being used) throughout the lunge.
——
2: Increasing the weight is supported in the literature as well as a means of increasing the demands placed on the glutes during single leg exercises. In my thesis, a larger shift to the glutes occurred past 50% body weight, and to the largest extent at 75% BW..... but to be fair.. we stopped at 75% BW...
——
3: The literature supports that rooting your foot leads to proper foot intrinsic activation and utilization. This leads to less knee collapse (knee valgus). And finally this knee valgus indirectly leads to less utilization of the powerful gluteus muscles during single leg exercises.
——
——
