Giving Up Meat Could Help Your Health -- And the Planet's If Americans traded in their hamburgers for tofu, buckwheat and asparagus, it could make a big difference in the health of the planet -- without shortchanging anyone on nutrients.

March is National Nutrition Month, a profession I chose  40 years ago, in which I still maintain a passion. I have a  4 year degree in nutrition in addition  to a clinical rotation.  I agonized over  hours of biochemistry, anatomy and physiology, nutritional science  and countless hours over the years of continuing education to maintain my title and expertise as a registered dietitian. Over those years I have ridden the fads of fat  free diets, Adkins, Paleo and more recently gluten free and ketogenic diets. I have had to balance nutrition knowledge in the context of the healthy and the diseased.  I have had to sift the misrepresentation and profiteering of nutrition by so called experts, who may have no more than a high school education. I have further had to compete with chiropractors, nurses, naturopaths  and  physicians  which  may have  no more than a few hours of formal education on nutrition but  are able to  represent themselves as experts.  Most professions need a formal education to obtain their title as doctor, nurse, physical therapist, but in many states anyone can label themselves a nutritionist  and provide nutrition advice.  If you are taking the time to read this please scrutinize who you listen to on this important topic. What is the education of the nutrition expert you are listening to or reading. Are they a registered dietitian?  Do they have a masters or PhD in nutrition? What is their experience?  Is their focus trying to sell you something? Even if they have the formal education are they an expert in the area of your concern?  I have lots of experience but I would not recommend seeing myself for an eating disorder.  It’s not my specialty. 
If you are a doctor, nurse, chiropractor, even naturopath reading this,  instead of trying to be an expert in this area refer them to someone who has the experience and time to  educate on nutrition appropriately.  I know very few providers that have an hour to talk about nutrition (the typical amount of time a nutrition expert provides ). It’s easy to throw out words like “don’t eat gluten” “eat vegan” but people need help in how to make these changes.Nutrition advice is medical advice.#nutrition 03/19/2019
