Fulcrum Gallery
Fulcrum Gallery specializes in up and coming contemporary artists I had the unique opportunity build out this venue in Hilltop.
Established in 2007
Fulcrum Gallery opened December 2007, the brainchild of renowned Artist Oliver Doriss. The Fulcrum Project is a combination of many things, a constantly evolving amalgamation of gallery/installation space, fine art retail, as well as an artistic community hub. "For some years my interest in a display venue had been languishing in the background of my artistic career. With Tacom

Introducing David Rios. He is one of the rising youth stars in the Tacoma glass scene. I have been impressed by his artistic approach. He uses traditional glass working techniques to create pieces exploring his Mexican American cultural identity. Rios discovered his passion for glass in 2010 during an intensive work program with Hilltop Artists. Over a decade of experimentation and creative risk taking, Rios has earned scholarships from Pilchuck OfrendaGlass School and The National Craft School Experience which have allowed him to invest significant time and resources into exploring his craft. Most recently Rios was awarded the 2020 Greg Peircy Grant for his dedication to youth development through art. We are excited to showcase David’s distinctively Chicano styled glass art at the upcoming show Riff Raff at Fulcrum Gallery. To find out more about David Rios and his journeys in the medium of glass visit his website riosonfire, delicioso!
Jacob Willcox is a light and mixed media Artist from Tacoma, Washington, and a recent graduate of Alfred University’s Sculptural and Dimensional Studies program. He has explored all types of glass-making, vessels, goblets, glass formulation, but it is the scientific and technical nature of neon that holds his interest. His current work is an explorationBlue Neon Arow by Jacob Wilcox of visual communication. Symbols, graphics and linear forms transmit unique and subtle information.
“My work explores the visual language of compulsion and consumption; asking what it is about signage that triggers our compulsivity? I employ traditional neon signage to create cacophonous, overwhelming spaces. Using neon and mixed media the workexists on the line between risk and reward. Seeing neon signage at billboard proportions in a gallery settingand the way it affects our perception of space and environment, it embraces absurdity and engulfs the viewer.” -Jacob Willcox
To see Jacobs latest installation visit Fulcrum Gallery this week for the opening of Riff Raff Thursday at 6pm. Outside of his artistic practice he runs a small neon studio where he takes on commissions and special projects. You can visit his his website jacobwillcox.com to learn more about this amazing human being.
I came into Bri’s sphere working at a small studio In Seattle Washington. She was new to town and working the glass circuit. A couple days at this shop, couple days at the Glass Eye Studio. A romantic and uniquely Seattle way of living… piecing your bills together through itinerent labor. As I have followed Bri’s trajectory watching her grow and develop a distinctive sensual candy monster style. MonsterIn a male dominated world Bri’s work is unapologetically feminine. Her pieces are multi-media by nature combining different glass techniques with many other mediums. Drawing from the wild and erotic character of the natural environment her work reflects on cultural obsessions of beauty and their relationships to internal anatomies. By fusing similar elements found in biology and botany she creates forms that ‘flirt’ with the audience, exploring ideas of intimacy and desire. See Bri’s work this Thursday 6pm at Fulcrum Gallery for our glass show Riff Raff .
“I get asked often how I got into glass blowing. to which I respond, “I followed the fire.” – Bri Chesler

This Guy! To say Mr. Galen McCarty Turner is a multi disciplined artist is just not enough. Part carnival-busker part tinker-smith and two parts mad-scientist. He is most widely known as a neon artist however his creative drive takes him deep in many pursuits. He is a collector and producer of oddities, chachka, art, and trouble. I as a professional artist am envious of Galen’s creative drive. He makes creative and fun things every day unfettered by financial justification. He isBike Jump a true creative, a true artist. Something I need to incorporate into my own life.
Come see Galen’s latest musings in neon in the physical realm at Fulcrum Gallery May 19th 6pm at our first show this year Riff Raff. Also If you are deep enough in Tacoma / glass culture to know about the legendary “Bike Jump” than you are in for a treat! May 19th at dusk in the alley it’s happening again! don’t miss it. Grit City Mag has a write up about this years event. Reception and opening at Fulcrum Gallery to follow.

Meet Trenton Quiocho, another artist in our glass show next week. For myself as a career glass artist who has worked all over the United States I was pleasantly surprised to discover Tacoma. The dirty little sister of Seattle, always second place and constantly s**t on by the surrounding municipalities. What I discovered was a gorgeous city with an amazing art scene, vibrant party / warehouse culture and a strong identity (that reminded me of the East Coast). Additionally they teach glassblowing in the high schools so the average 17 year old has 3 years of glass training already adding to this glass art utopia. Trenton Quiocho a product of this unique little berg of a city. Trent is dedicated to the craft of glass and youth development through art. He began his explorations in glass as a student in Tacoma and has continued with the material for over a decade. He has worked as a glassblower and hot shop technician with many organizations and most recently curated his first formal museum show at Tacoma Art Museum titled GATHER:. New works and events can be viewed here at his website basoglass.com. We here at Fulcrum Gallery are excited to work with Trenton and showcase some of his signature sculptural works on display next week for our show titled Riff Raff. Hope to see you there!
“Glass provides the opportunity to create a revitalized, visual language that speaks to this cultural iconography, and through this, breathe new life into the folktales and stories behind them. Creating these objects affirms my connection to this history, allows me to explore and understand the symbolism behind them, and ignites the spark that fuels my curiosity in learning more about Filipino culture and history.” – Trenton Quiocho.

For many reasons I am excited to have Morgan Peterson in our up coming show next week. Firstly we share a common the ancestral home land of Massachusetts, also we share the same Alma Mater by a decade or so, but most importantly she gets my vibe. Morgan Peterson is a graduate of Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2006 with a dual degree. Upon completion, she relocated to Seattle, WA. to pursue her career and continue her education and advancement in the field of contemporary fine art. Morgan has worked with many notable artists in her time here in the Pacific North West. Her work is a contemporary exploration of our modern culture. Additionally I am proud and impressed with her continued drive and successes in the male dominated field of glass art. We here at Fulcrum Gallery are excited to have her as a part of our glass show Riff Raff in conjunction with the International Glass Conference here in Tacoma. To see more about Morgan and her work visit her website www.morganpetersondesign. , , , ,
I met Joe at a Seattle glass factory a number of years ago. He was a skilled worker but the thing that struck me most about him was his creativity. He has spent many a summer at Pilchuck Glass School working on his glass craft and artistic forms. In 2019 he participated in Transparency a LGBTQ+ focused show at the Tacoma Glass Museum. He creates many of his works in glass but similar to myself is not limited by it. Joe has recently began producing artwork in the digital realm, specifically artwork backed by blockchain technology. He has a large collection of NFT’s that you can check out at here at JoeCirc’s Market. Also he begun exploring modular synths, a compounding style of live electronic music creation. To experience his live electronic music visit his YouTube Channel. It is Joe’s constant evolution and exploration that inspired me to feature him in our up coming show Riff Raff at Fulcrum Gallery. To see more of his artwork visit queerglass.tumblr.

Two Blue-collar factory cities, both with a love of drink, breathtaking natural beauty, and a hearty romantic lifestyle. It has been said that Tacoma may be home to the largest glass community out side of Murano Italy. Both places are incredibly similar, mirroring each other in many ways. Each has long history of glass making, manufacture, and design. Also both have become a destination for artists and designers looking to have their works translated into this seductive medium called glass. Murano is an ancient community built up around the manufacture of glass. It touches all industries from restaurants to cafes shipping, retail and tourism. Like a complex machine this community has many parts. A myriad of roles are necessary to keep these gears of commerce turning. The uninitiated observer only perceives the surface this practice. A cursory glance blinded by the big and shiny objects while remaining oblivious of the under workings that make it all possible.
The goal of Riff Raff is to give voice and place to those who work behind the scenes in the Pacific Northwest. This exhibition showcases a spectrum of people working in the field of glass. From mainstream to obscure, both young and established artists have been selected demonstrating the range of practices, and diversity of the Pacific North West glass community.
Participating Artists:
Megan Stelljes, Bri Chesler, Joe Sircoulomb, Trent Quiocho, Morgan Peterson, Galen McCarty Turner, Oliver Doriss, Dick Weis, David Rios, Walt Leiberman, Jacob Wilcox
