Multi-million dollar investments could be coming to downtown Tallahassee.
The Monroe Street enhancement project is up for consideration, and if the plan gets approved some significant changes could be coming to Monroe Street between Jefferson and Call Streets.
"We understand that there may be some temporary impact,” said City of Tallahassee Commissioner Dianne Williams-Cox. “But, we’re hoping that this temporary impact will lead to permanent solutions for making sure that businesses are thriving.”
Williams-Cox says these types of investments are necessary for long-term improvements in the city.
“As we work very hard to make our downtown become an 18-hour downtown, we need to also make sure that this is a safe place,” said Williams-Cox. “The economic impact of being able to have safe sidewalks and being able to get in and out of businesses, it’s going to pay off.”
The project is expected to cost about $5.5 million, and the commission is asking the CRA to fund $2.5 million of those dollars.
The Downtown Redevelopment Commission is set to meet on Aug. 6 to discuss recommendations for moving the Monroe Street Downtown Sidewalk Enhancement Project forward.

July is Park and Recreation Month, and the Tallahassee CRA has been featuring our districts' great parks. You can learn more about our local parks at the City of Tallahassee - Parks, Recreation & Neighborhood Affairs social media page.
On December 13, 2018, the CRA Board approved $6.4M in support of the Greater Bond Neighborhood First Plan. The plan adopted included $30,000 for improvements at Speed Spencer Stephens Park. The community benefits from the combined efforts of residents, Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Affairs, Underground Utilities, and Public Infrastructure, were enhanced by the addition of new benches and picnic tables funded by the CRA.
The Speed Spencer Stephens Park can be accessed at 1907 Saxon Street. The 2.4-acre park offers a paved trail designed for multi-use activities. It is also where the Annual Walk Through Living History Festival has taken place. The park’s amenities include benches, parking, picnic tables, and a pond.
The Tallahassee CRA celebrates the neighborhoods within the districts and the individuals who work so hard to create a tight-knit community for all.

July is Park and Recreation Month, and the Tallahassee CRA features our districts' great parks. This week we are featuring Cascades Park! You can learn more about our local parks at the City of Tallahassee - Parks, Recreation & Neighborhood Affairs social media page.
Cascades Park, located within the Tallahassee CRA Downtown District, is a 24-acre family-oriented, community space with miles of multi-use trails. It offers a variety of outdoor and recreational amenities, such as the Adderley Amphitheater, Florida’s Prime Meridian Marker, event spaces, restaurants, retail, play spaces, educational attractions, and much more.
The Tallahassee CRA has been committed to the community benefit of Cascades Park since November 16, 2009, when the CRA Board dedicated $1.1 Million of the Downtown District Community Redevelopment Area Trust Funds to support the project as identified by the Leon County – Blueprint Intergovernmental Agency Blueprint 2000.
You may or may not know that Cascades Park is a stormwater management system with underground channels, open streams, and retention ponds. It was designed to provide flood relief both north and south of the park and is designed to flood during major storm events. It is also a stormwater facility that is immersed in history. The fountain in the heart of the park and the name Cascades commemorate Tallahassee’s origins: in the 1800s, two delegates met there, in the middle (one from St. Augustine and one from Pensacola), to find the best place to create our state capital. All along the trails, you can learn about the history of Tallahassee and the Cascades Park area. Memorials include the Community Remembrance Marker, Jail Over Bail, Korean War Memorial, and Smokey Hollow Commemoration.
The Tallahassee CRA would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the Leon County – City of Tallahassee Blueprint 2000 Intergovernmental Agency for creating a space with such a beautiful balance of protection, function, education, and fun. We would also like to thank the City of Tallahassee Parks and Recreation Department staff for fostering community by maintaining safe, accessible spaces for all ages to appreciate and enjoy.
Special thanks: National Recreation and Park Association

On December 13, 2018, the CRA Board approved $6.4M in support of the Greater Bond Neighborhood First Plan. The plan adopted included $650,000 for designing and constructing a linear park from Speed-Spencer-Stephens Park to Tallahassee Junction Park and, eventually, the St. Marks Trail. The community benefits from the combined efforts of residents, Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Affairs, and Underground Utilities, Public Infrastructure are apparent with additional green space and expanded access to recreational activities. (Read more about public infrastructure at https://www.talgov.com/page/publicinfrastructure)
The Greater Bond Community Linear Park, completed in 2022, is a welcome addition to the neighborhood. Residents and City of Tallahassee, FL - Government staff worked together to develop the Greater Bond Neighborhood First Plan, which included the linear park as one of the proposed improvements. Thanks to this joint effort, the neighborhood now has a well-lit, paved trail lined with landscaping, benches, and water fountains. The lights can change colors and have been utilized to celebrate special occasions and community events.
In 2022, the CRA also provided a $10,000 match for the $15,000 South Arts grant received for the Linear Park Art Garden.

Glasses clinked and camera shutters snapped Tuesday, as the first wave of patrons filled the luxurious dining room at SoMo Walls' anchor tenant, The Monroe, an upscale eatery that has launched its month-long soft opening.
Developer Bugra Demirel described Tuesday night as "an emotional moment," especially for those who have worked day and night to make it happen. SoMo Walls is on South Monroe Street between Oakland Avenue and Harrison Street, not too far south of the Capitol.
The fine-dining eatery doesn't have its grand opening till Aug. 2, but, based on the night's reactions, The Monroe is bringing a new sense of energy to the South Monroe corridor.
