On July 8, 1987, I embarked on the greatest journey of my life by marrying the love of my life, Mercedes. Today, celebrating 35 years together, I find myself wishing I could ask her to marry me all over again. Time has flown by in a blur of joy and love, and looking back, I realize how grateful I am that she said yes.
It's amazing how swiftly the years have passed, yet they've been filled with countless moments of pure happiness. Choosing Mercedes to be my partner was the best decision I've ever made, and marrying into her wonderful Italian family has been an added blessing.
Our journey began at St. Rocco's Church in Cleveland, captured forever by my best friend Gary Leif through his lens. From that day forward, Mercedes has not only been my wife but also my best friend, my confidante, and my constant source of strength.

Last week, at one of our real estate staff meetings, I was surprised to find out that many of the attendees could not answer why or when the holiday originated. Our broker is a history buff and reminded us when and why the holiday originated.
Memorial Day originated in the aftermath of the American Civil War as a day to honor and remember those who had died in military service. The precise origins are somewhat disputed, with several towns and cities claiming to be the birthplace of the holiday. However, it is generally agreed that the tradition of decorating soldiers' graves began during the Civil War era.
The earliest known observance was in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1865, organized by formerly enslaved people to honor Union soldiers who had died in a Confederate prison camp. The event included a procession, speeches, and the decoration of graves with flowers.
Another early observance was held in Waterloo, New York, on May 5, 1866, which was later recognized by the federal government as the official birthplace of Memorial Day. In 1868, General John A. Logan, commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union veterans, issued General Order No. 11, designating May 30 as a day to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers. This day was chosen because it was not the anniversary of any specific battle.
Originally called Decoration Day, the holiday gradually became known as Memorial Day and expanded to honor all American military personnel who died in all wars, not just the Civil War. On May 26, 1966, President Johnson signed a presidential proclamation recognizing Waterloo, New York, as the "birthplace" of Memorial Day. This was based on the community's early observance of the May 5, 1866 holiday. This acknowledgment was significant in formally associating Waterloo with the origins of the holiday, though it did not change the holiday's name.
In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday by an act of Congress and was moved to the last Monday in May to create a three-day weekend for federal employees.
Today, Memorial Day is observed with ceremonies, parades, and various tributes, including the decoration of graves with flowers and flags, to honor the sacrifice of those who have died in military service to the United States.
