There is only one corner of the universe you can be certain of improving, and that's your own self. .
I love my old house... It's a 1921, possibly a modified Sears house, as it was confirmed to have come in on a train in 1920. there's a wrap around porch, Gingerbread trim, a beautiful chimney and 11 rooms on 4.42 acres, with a South-facing hill, a productive spring, a root cellar, a monolithic slab garage...
I live in SE Ohio, so there are no codes, which means I am absolutely qualified for the job of repairing this! LOL
I am concerned about the $$$$!
Does anyone have any suggestions for grants or other methods of funding to help me? I live in a Federally designated Economically depressed area or whatever they call it....
Totally uninterested in loans! I absolutely would not qualify due to student loans! I can handle literally anything, major carpentry, trim, plumbing, cement... Just need more money! hah
Bare minimum, the place would make a fabulous farm... even if I have to raze the house!
I did it!!! Got rid of those horribly overgrown boxwoods! Look how it opened things up!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Now to address the railing! I like the metal but it needs to be more substantial or white or both! 😂
We bought our 1901 home less than a year ago. We are currently living in the small house (originally cook's house. Main home has some safety issues, but it's allowing us to live separate from renovations. This is our tiny bedroom before and after. Any advice on how to decorate. I haven't added an artwork due to slanted walls? No closets 😫 any storage suggestions would be appreciated!
I live in a house that was built in the 50s. I have this room that is so dated. Please send pictures of how you brought it to the future.
We have painted the outside finally after the windows and door got installed. We also went to the archives to start digging into the age of our little cottage. So far we've managed to trace it back to 1852. It's quite a bit of work to find details, especially in welsh 😀
Does anyone know why the bottom of my stairs look like they used to have hinges? Does this open somehow? 1918 house. there's 0 budge
After reading about the stories of ivy damaging older homes I chose to pull down our beautiful ivy growing around the door only how I’m wondering how I fix this damage?? Having regret and missing my ivy 😭🙈
Not sure if this is allowed…we found these in our garage while doing a clean out today. Our house was built in 1908 but I have no idea when the garage was built. They are glass. Can anyone help identify what they are used for?
We took down the wall between our dining room and steps with the intention of just putting in a railing/insert to open up the area. Now we are struggling with what to do with the circled area. Any suggestions??
Our window frame is rotting. The wood is soft and wet inside and outside. When it rains the floor gets wet. We can't find anyone to come look at/ fix it. Would we just need a whole new window or can just the frame be fixed?
I don’t like this tile on my 1915 fireplace. Anything I need to know before I take it off. Any recommendations for an update?
Edit: I suggested replacing the plywood with fir plywood but he said it won’t match up? It’s not in my budget to entirely replace all the wood.
Looking for advice. I impulsively pulled up the nasty carpet from my stairs in my 1920’s house. The upper half is the original fir and as you can see, the lower is plywood. What are my options aside from completely tearing them out and starting new which is what a contractor told me. The plan is to have them wood, no carpet.
Any idea where I can get a skeleton key copy made? I can't find anyone locally. I've ordered all the generic ones I can find, but none of them work. I have one key that works, but I have 5 locks that need this same key, and I want copies made.
What is the best way to remove the paint from the copper?
I received estimates of nearly $4k to remove the paint and polish the copper.
I'm renovating my. 1945 house. It's not as old as sone in this group. But under. 1 layer of carpet and 2 layers of floral colored vinyl/ tar flooring. It appears they tried. Sanding the original plank floors... dobt nniw why they stopped. But. Time to cover it up with some carpet tile. Pics. To follow
Anyone know what this was used for ?
We are renovating our 1900’s farmhouse kitchen. Backsplash question. Do we extend the granite up the wall 16” with a 2” ledge on top (current plan) or do we go with something different like white subway tile? Is extending the granite too much granite? Input please :)
My house isn't as old as most of yours on this page (1960s) but I need suggestions. Dog broke the glass of this glass piece beside our front door. I'm having a hard time finding anything that will fit. Even an entire new door frame would need to be modified and it's out of my budget. I'm thinking whatever I replace this with I'll have to custom build for it's size. And I hate cutting glass. Having a window here is nice, so I'd prefer not to board it up. Wife wants it replaced with stained glass which I'm guessing would also be out of my budget. Guilty dog in background.
Might anyone be able to help date the older siding underneath our very clearly damaged wood siding? Please don’t tell me this needs replaced or that the blocked-off chimney needs to come down; we know. We bought the house last year and this project is in next year’s budget. I just want to know if we are going to run into any surprises 🫣
House built in 1928, per the inspection paperwork.
Thanks in advance!
Ive recently discovered on my windows i have curtain like "k***s". Does anyone know what these actually are and what goes here? My guess is that its for extra curtain underneath the main curtain. House was built 1860~1880
Just looked at and made a low shot offer for this 1925 house. I've stalked this page for a couple years and hoped for my own fixer upper.
This one is part of an estate and has been sitting vacant for a while and hasn't had a lot of interest so hoping they consider the offer and come farther down in price. (The town it's in is kind of in between 2 bigger towns a half hour away so not a lot of movement there.)
Has decent structure, needs a lot of cosmetic work. Contingent on inspection. Big plus is a partial basement, good size garage. Definitely an upgrade from the trailer we live in now that we are renting.
Hope to come on more frequently soon with before/after shots in the upcoming months!
Just closed on my first house. She's a humble working class house in Philadelphia.
Was pulling up the carpet to expose the old wood floors and found this linoleum. Any guesses on age? The house itself is 1864 which doesn’t narrow things down much.
ETA- we plan on keeping it. The rest of it appears to be squared off with a boarder and does mimic a rug. When we removed other carpeting in thr next room we found an unstained rectangle in the middle with the outside being stained that dark color.
The biggest struggle I’m having right now is finding replacement hardware for our pocket doors. Three of the pull plates are missing and now that I’ve found the pattern, it’s always sold out.
Are there companies out there that makes replicas that I’m just not finding? Google search only gives me like three reclaim companies that are online.
What I do know is the hardware was manufactured but Mallory and Wheeler Co. and the pattern is referred to as Crazy Quilt.
Any leads are appreciated!! ☺️
Long time lurker, 1st time posting. Please show me your window treatments that have accommodated long radiators, preferably without the use of tie backs or similar. The shutters are new so they stay.
Edit to add: thank you for all your input!
Our house was built in 1887. We just finished a major renovation/restoration of most of the second floor, including this bedroom. Our lives can get pretty frenetic and stressful sometimes so we were looking for our bedroom to be a place of calm (visual simplicity) and went very contemporary in decorating. That said, we wanted to keep elements of the history of the house: an exposed chimney, the restored hardwood floors and the radiator, which was sanded & repainted.
As it is now, I’d like something to soften the look of the room somewhat & was thinking some (minimal) window treatments could do the job. I completely agree re the beauty of the woodwork & shutters.
I need to sand and stain this to the exact same finish (but dont have or know what kind it is). So looking to get a scrap board to test out.
Is this just white or red oak?
We have a big decision to make for our 1898 schoolhouse - what color gutters?
Brown gutters and ivory downspouts (like it is now)?
Or faux copper (like the accents)? And if we go with copper, should the garage be copper too? Or brown & ivory?
I practically live here in summer. I’d love to see your porches
Hi! I have a 1919 build Sears Catalog home. I’m looking for advice on paint color palate ideas! I just had a mason repair the front bottom portion of my porch after discovering the damage behind some super overgrown bushes in my flower beds. Now that that’s done, I’ve found a painter that will paint the front porch and the 4’ foundation wall around the house. And the awnings!
I’m thinking a dark gray on the foundation wall and the front concrete portion. White trim and the ‘H’s back to gray and coming in with black on the details. Was thinking a deep purple at first but I don’t want to go too crazy and switched it to deep gray. But I think I do need color here! Any advice with colors is much appreciated! They plan to start next Monday but if I have to postpone this job because I can’t make a decision about a dang color, I’ll be very disappointed in myself!
Our c1825 home. Very clever way of splitting the bottom steps so that the servants could enter either room from one set of stairs . The paper on the wall dates back to 1842.
